GdS: Milan receive a timely boost as Tomori returns – he should go straight back into the XI

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan got the positive (pardon the pun) news yesterday that Fikayo Tomori is now negative for Covid-19 and he returned to training with the rest of the squad.

Early in 2022, Stefano Pioli has had to do without a number of players who contracted the virus and among them was Tomori, but La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports that he did training as normal on Tuesday having received the all clear to do so and now he is already fighting for a spot.

He is likely to be in the starting eleven who will face Shevchenko’s Genoa in the Coppa Italia round of 16 tomorrow night, partnering one of Pierre Kalulu and Matteo Gabbia who did well against Roma and Venezia. Pioli will evaluate which pairing to use, but it is possible Kalulu could shift to right-back to give Alessandro Florenzi a rest.

The recovery of the Englishman is certainly excellent news for Milan who are now waiting for Calabria, Romagnoli and Castillejo to recover from Covid, while Kessie, Bennacer and Ballo-Touré are at the African Cup of Nations and Plizzari, Kjaer and Pellegri are still injured.
