GdS: Milan remain top at Easter – another clean sheet and a return to scoring

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan ensured that they will spend Easter at the top of the table thanks to a comfortable 2-0 win over Genoa at San Siro last night.

After the last two disappointing performances, it was on the Rossoneri to respond to Inter and maintain their two-point advantage over the Nerazzurri. As reported today by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), the main thing from the match against Genoa is that it was the sixth consecutive game in the league in which Mike Maignan leaves the field without having conceded a goal.

Milan have not recorded such numbers since the 1993-94 season when Fabio Capello’s side managed on two occasions to amassed a run of more than 6 clean sheets. Then, in the 1971-72 season it was Nereo Rocco’s men who also want past 6 consecutive clean sheets.

An excellent defence without a concrete attack is nothing as Milan experienced in the last two matches against Bologna and Torino, so the good news was that last night – after 222 minutes without a goal – Rafael Leao and Junior Messias each netted.

The Rossoneri’s attacking performance may not have been overwhelming but Pioli’s men were able to be concrete in front of goal, which in recent occasions they had not been able to do.
