GdS: Milan welcome an injury-stricken Spurs – an opportunity presents itself

By Oliver Fisher -

The Champions League anthem will ring out around a sold out San Siro again tonight as AC Milan host Spurs in the first leg of their last 16 clash.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) talks about how tonight represents a great opportunity for Milan. Both the Rossoneri and Tottenham are currently in fifth place in their respective leagues, with Pioli’s men 18 points away from Napoli while Conte’s side are 12 away from Arsenal.

Pioli has always tried to to play proactive football but it was causing Milan to leak a lot of goals, so from the derby against Inter he changed his attitude by switching to three-man defence.

After nine goals conceded in two games against Lazio and Spurs, the Rossoneri have only conceded a single goal from Lautaro Martinez in the last two matches, but Pioli himself said that a high intensity will be needed to win and it won’t be enough to defend all game.

As far as Spurs are concerned, there are many and important absences in midfield. The defence is only the 15th-best in the Premier League for goals conceded and there will also be the absence of Hugo Lloris in goal.

Skipp and Sarr should play in midfield, and could come under pressure from the electric San Siro crowd given their inexperience at the highest level. However, with Kane and Son leading the attack, there is still a lot of danger.

  1. Don’t be fooled still stronger than us in every department more or less especially how we’ve been playing. Currently at stansted airport on my way and hoping it’s not a wasted journey. Forza Milan

    1. Well done you! Enjoy the match whatever happens, atmosphere should be great!

Its such a shame we are playing so badly. This could be a huge opportunity given Tottenham form and absences.
I just hope we are not embarrassed on the European stage again. We are Italian champions and must show some character!!

      Forza Milan
