UEFA Cup heartbreak and Crouch’s winner: Milan’s worrying precedent against Spurs

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan were drawn against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League round of 16 in what will be a repeat of the tie 11 years ago.

Milan have played Spurs four times in their history, and the one that current fans will remember most is the two-legged affair in the 2010-11 edition of the same competition in which just one goal came in over 180 minutes of action.

The Rossoneri would go on to win the Scudetto that year but ultimately they bowed out to the north London club in the knockouts of the UCL, with Peter Crouch’s goal enough to earn a 1-0 win for Harry Redknapp’s side at San Siro ahead of a 0-0 second leg draw at White Hart Lane.

The previous meetings came in the 1971-72 edition of the UEFA cup and again it was Spurs who went through after a first leg win and a second leg draw to reach the final of the competition.

This time the first leg was in Tottenham with the hosts winning 2-1 after a Steve Perryman brace secured a comeback after Romeo Benetti’s opener. Back at San Siro, Alan Mullery made it 3-1 on aggregate with a Gianni Rivera equaliser from the penalty spot making it a one-goal tie again, but no winner came and Spurs went through 3-2.

  1. I still remember the Mario Yepes trying for the glory tackle to this day. There’s a saying, if u dont get the ball get the man. Yes, Yepes…our starting centre back…. for a UCL game….that had Bale, the fast version. So I hope I don’t hear anymore complaints about our CB pairings. I also remember Spurs parking the bus for 90 mins in their home turf smh
