ML: Milan better with Ibrahimovic but not totally dependant on him – the numbers

By Oliver Fisher -

One of the big talking points that seems to constantly surround Milan is whether or not the team are dependant on Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

As MilanLive writes, Ibrahimovic’s overall tally since returning to Milan is as follows: 47 appearances, 28 goals and 8 assists. He has signed a new contract which will see him stay into his 40s, and the hope is that the many injuries last season was just a blip.

In the 2019-20 season there were 4 matches in which Zlatan was unable to take part due to injury or disqualification which resulted in two wins and two draws. The Swede was present, but on the bench, against SPAL in the Coppa Italia when Milan won 3-0.

In the 2020-21 season there were 25 matches that Ibra missed due to injury, disqualification or because he had Covid. The stats read as follows: 15 wins (one on penalties against Rio Ave), 6 draws and 4 defeats. Only once did he remain on the bench: the Europa League Round of 32 first leg against Red Star in Belgrade, a 2-2 draw.

In the league with Ibrahimovic on the field the average points per game was 2.21, while without him it is 1.95. These are not bad numbers given Ante Rebic or Rafael Leao has often had to step in due to Mario Mandzukic’s injury problems. That being said, there were avoidable draws against Parma and Genoa in the first half of the season, while in the second half points were dropped against Udinese and Cagliari.
