MN: Calabria the latest Milan player to undergo a resurgence under Pioli – consistency is key

By Oliver Fisher -

Heading into the summer, it seemed that the right-back spot was nailed on to be one of the positions that AC Milan would address in the transfer market.

However, as MilanNews notes, Davide Calabria seems to have found his groove again for the first time in over a year. We saw what the Primavera graduate was capable of under Gennaro Gattuso when he showed excellent consistency, but that vanished in a difficult 2019-20 campaign.

Towards the end of last season though the Rossoneri full-back found the right condition physically and began to undergo a resurgence just as other members of the team did, and now he is one of the first names of the team sheet having carried that on.

Thanks to Conti’s injury and Diogo Dalot’s short period of adaptation (having recently arrived in Italy), Calabria is finding the right space to show that he can play a key role once again.

He has simplified his game which has resulted in less mistakes and the confidence of Pioli has been key. The competition of Conti and Dalot could be a blessing too, as it has forced the 23-year-old to up his levels or end up on the transfer list.

His performances have been very positive so far, but he will have to continue on this path if he is to keep his spot in the XI.
