MN: Defender set for Milan return – he could be useful if physical guarantees are provided

By Oliver Fisher -

Mattia Caldara will have to convince Milan from multiple points of view if he is to earn a spot in the squad for next season, a report claims.

According to MilanNews, Caldara will not be signed permanently by Atalanta despite their €16m option to buy, and therefore at the end of this season he will return to Milan. The Bergamo club signed him back in January 2020 on an 18-month loan with an option, but have already decided not to sign him outright.

The defender returned to his former side with the hope of finding form again and returning to the player he had shown himself to be up until a few seasons ago. However, things did not go as he had hoped as he had 14 league appearances last season and – due to a three-month injury – he has just 113 minutes played in the current campaign.

Despite being just 26, Caldara has had several physical problems that have greatly affected his performance in recent years, a lot of them long-term too. If he were to give physical guarantees, it could be an interesting opportunity for Milan to add centre-back depth, so as soon as he returns to Milanello he will have to demonstrate during the preseason that he has solved all his problems.
