MN: Fonseca eyeing new position for Kalulu – the thinking behind a move

By Ben Dixon -

It has been reported that AC Milan are looking for a new right-back this summer, but a report has suggested that the mercato may not be the only way the club finds one.

Davide Calabria’s situation is not a massively concerning one, and Milan are far from desperate to sign another right-back. Instead, the Rossoneri are surveying the mercato to see what options are available to create healthy competition for the position.

Now that Paulo Fonseca has arrived at Milanello and training is well underway, observations have been taking place about players, especially to evaluate what roles they can play within the squad next season, and a player of intrigue is Pierre Kalulu.

In the past, the French defender has played at right-back, but it has not been his go-to position. According to Milan News, though, there is a possibility his future could be in the position, due to early signs in training.

During his first press conference, the Portuguese coach stated he liked the player and admired that he could play in a few different roles, and this thinking has continued into training, where the French defender has impressed at right-back.

“Kalulu plays in both positions [central defence and right-back]. I am satisfied with having almost all the defenders to start the work. Normally I start with the defensive phase, but only Theo is missing. It is positive to have this possibility of having Kalulu with different roles: he is not very attacking but it will depend on the structure of the game. I am satisfied with this possibility of playing in different roles.”

Of course, if this is seen as a viable option, it could retract the need for recruitment in the mercato and strengthen the budget for other positions, such as central defence, where the Rossoneri could be close to starting to invest in.

  1. Absolutely zero need to sign Royal. 1. Cause hes garbage but 2. we have Kalulu, Calabria, Terraciano.

Use those funds and secure Morata, Fofana, Pavlovic and Rabiot. Great mercato

    1. Yeah if we’d signed Buongiourno rather than trying to waste money on Emerson Royale + a lesser known CB, we could have the left side of our defense sorted and Kalulu could cover both RB and RCB when needed.

Sometimes quality over quantity is the better option, even from the “moneyball” perspective

        1. Perhaps, but Buongiorno is proven in Serie A you know you’re getting a high level performer in this league. Pavlovic might be a good signing but it’s less certain.

Either way, if we get Pavlovic I would hope the management don’t waste money on Emerson Royale he’s useless. Either find a decent target in the same price range, or gamble on Fonseca being able to use Kalulu /Terraciano / Jimenez as competition for Calabria.

          1. Pavlovic might not be proven in Serie A, but he is proven in the Champions League. That is the only level that matters, and it’s more than you can sua about Buongiorno, Calafiori, Scalvini and any other available Serie A defender. Pavlovic has also been developed for the modern game through the Red Bull system so this is a much better deal for Milan. And not overpriced like Buongiorno clearly is

          2. No that’s not what you said. You rolled out lazy moneyball nonsense and called Pavlovic an unknown waste of money (he’s not) until you were challenged. At least stand by your guns, even if they are water pistols.

  2. Omg what a mastermind he will play Kalulu at the positions where he was playing previously, that is so disruptive.

  3. Kalulu is an extremely solid player, and he been our right back is extremely good, Terraciano could be his sub, even Simic could be used as a rit back, he has the build a d the confidence to do it, this why it’s not always good for a club to start disposing of players before a new coach as watched and seen them first hand, I noticed that even Coubis is back with Milan Futuro, if he manages to regain his fitness and good form, then he could be brought into the first team..

  4. Kalulu gives the flexibility to easily move into 343 if necessary in the attacking phase.
He gives freedom to Theo on the other flank

  5. Always said it. We have Kalulu, Simic and Jimenes for that position if needed. We have Thiaw and Simic for RB. We need 1 CB to backup Tomori and thats it in defense.
What we really need it DM Fofana sounds good.
