MN: From 5-0 destruction in Bergamo to a first UCL win – Pioli’s renewal earned through journey

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan and Stefano Pioli have been through a remarkable journey together, and it is one that can only be classed as being partially completed.

MilanNews writes how a lot has changed since that awful day back December 2019 when Milan lost 5-0 against Atalanta in Bergamo and there was even speculation that Pioli could lose his job, which persisted alongside rumours Ralf Rangnick was being lined up to take over at the end of the season.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge in those two years though as he convinced the management to let him continue thanks to an excellent post-lockdown run. Milan today are another team, one with sharp and clear ideas, with an ambitious mindset, plus the desire and ability to win.

Pioli has been the key man behind it all along with other crucial figures such as directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara plus leaders in the squad like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer.

The culmination of all the work up to this point might just be the 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid last night – Pioli’s first win in the Champions League. Now it is time for his contract renewal, a well-earned one that shows just how much faith the club have in the 54-year-old.
