MN: Leao searching for consistency and confidence to get back to his best

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan winger Rafael Leao is taking the slow steps to getting back to his best after what was a very disappointing first half of the season for the Portuguese star.

As has been highlighted by Milan News, something Leao has been missing for almost all of his Milan career so far is consistency.

He is prone to having wonderful runs of form in which he is scoring or assisting in almost every game, and then barren runs in which he looks half the player that everyone knows him to be.

He showed a hint of consistency as he played well and scored in both of Milan’s recent Coppa Italia matches against Cagliari and Atalanta, even if the Rossoneri exited the tournament.

In order to achieve consistent performances in Serie A for the rest of the season, Leao needs to have as much confidence in his abilities as the fans and everyone else at Milan do.

There have been too many examples this season of Leao getting into good positions but then overthinking the final pass or shot. He has good enough natural instincts that he should not need to think twice about what he is doing in the box.

If he plays in a more confident manner, the consistent performances should come for Leao.

  1. If you want goals, you practice, practice and practice. Determination is the key. You train the shots so hard that they come successfully without even thinking about it.

The goal-scoring abilities don’t improve by rapping in studios. It takes work. Ask Haaland. Ask Lewandowski. Or ask Giroud and/or Zlatan. None of them would say “Oh, I dunno. I’ve never done extra work – the goals just come naturally.”

Get on the pitch and start shooting.
