MN: Fears grow over Maldini’s potential summer disagreements with Milan’s owners

By Euan Burns -

There are growing concerns that AC Milan are in for another summer of confusion and disjointed thinking with disagreements existing between RedBird and Paolo Maldini, a report claims.

As reported by Milan News, sporting director Maldini could be in for the same sort of summer that he had last year. He and Frederic Massara only signed their contract extensions at the last moment as there was confusion over the direction of the club in the transfer market.

Given there could be a very small amount of money on offer for Massara and Maldini to play with this summer and many glaring errors in the squad, there could be friction.

Maldini has already spoken this season about the need for investment in the squad in the summer when he said before the Champions League semi-final first leg: “We must be good at understanding the moment and make investments now in order to reach the level of the other big teams”, and after the second leg: “Being back at this level must be exploited, also on an economic level by investing in order to remain among the top four and do well in Italy.”

Any differences in opinion between Maldini and the owners of the club must be ironed out.

  1. When I criticize the work of Paolo Maldini people usually say he is still better than what we had during the banter era.
If you take out Leao, Theo and Maignan, do we really have better squad than the infamous banter era squads?
Matter fact let’s keep Maignan in there, because even though he is way better than Gigio with his feet, as a shot stopper Gigio was just as good as Maignan.
    So let’s see the rest
Right back, are Calabria, Kalulu, Florenzi any better than Abate, DeSciglio, ?
Left back, is Ballo Toure any better than Constant, Antonini, Antonelli?
Center backs, are Tomori, Kjaer, Gabbia, Thiaw really better than prime Romagnoli before the injuries, Mexes, Alex, Zapata, Rami?
Midfielders, are Tonali, Bennacer, Krunic, Pobega, Bakayoko honestly better than Montollivo before he broke his leg playing for the NT, De Jong, Muntari, Kucka, Boateng, Honda, Essien. I mean c’mon.
Forwards, are Rebic, Origi, old man Giroud, Saelemakers, Messias, Diaz really better than Bacca, Pazzini, Balotelli, Niang, Suso, Menez.
    Be honest with yourself.
You take Leao and Theo out and we are a banter era Mid table team.
And before people come with the usual Maldini works with limited budget, only Juventus has spent more money than Milan in serie A over the last 5 years, but Juventus sold players, Milan made very few sales.
Plus the loss of Hakan, Kessie, Donnarumma, Romagnoli, Bonaventura, quality players that Maldini didn’t sign but he lost for free.

    1. LOL. What kind of logic is this? If you take out Mbappe, is PSG better than it’s banter era? Also, Did we win a title in the banter era? Did we even play in the CL in the banter era? If the banter era players were not that much worse than the ones now, did we even have a banter era?

Also, you didn’t read the article. It clearly says Maldini wants investment in the squad. It clearly says he wanted that last summer. How can you blame him for not bringing in players if he has no money to bring them in?

“only Juventus has spent more money than Milan in serie A over the last 5 years, but Juventus sold players, Milan made very few sales.” Juventus was also on a 9 scudetto winning streak when Elliott took over. They had the top squad in Italy. How much turn over are they going to do? They already have their squad established. And as you point out, if Milan “spent” more, it’s because they didn’t have the sales to offset. They didn’t have the sales to offset because they held on to players so that they could achieve results on the field.

But yes, let’s fire Maldini. Let’s fire the whole lot and bring in the best DS, whoever that is, and give him 35m euro so he can buy Mbappe and Haaland and pay them 30m per year. Lol.

Also, if Maignan is “way better” than than Donnarumma with his feet and the “same” in shot stopping, then Maignan is better than Donnarumma. Period. And only earning 3m per year or whatever, not 12. That’s 60m spend for PSG my man. So, huge win for us there.

      1. The Mbappe ,PSG comparison is ridiculous. Even without Mbappe PSG will win French league.
Look at Juventus, they played half of the season without their best player Vlahovic and they are 8 points ahead of us.
If Leao misses half of the season will be competing with Bologna and Udinese for the 9th, 10 th in the league with the rest of the players Maldini has signed.
Also, if you didn’t read Milan has invested more than any other club in serie A under Maldini, the problem is how were that money invested by the same Maldini.
But I like how you only chose to debate the Maignan Donnarumma comparison but didn’t say anything about the rest of the squad.
Gigio was making 6 mil at Milan not 12. And it isn’t the issue not renewing Gigio, but not selling him. Any player is replaceable.
I was speaking of the Gigio performance during the banter era. I said Maignan is better but Gigio was amazing at Milan.
Huge win by us, my man? Really?
Gigio was worth 60 nil minimum on the market that we lost by him leaving for free. Plus 15 million spent to buy Maignan.
So it cost super rich PSG, 60 mil to cover their GK spot by signing Gigio, but it cost us at least 75 mil to cover our GK spot.
Yeah that’s a huge win for us.
But Maldini complains about lack of money to invest.
Don’t lose players for free, learn how to sell players and you’ll have more money to invest

        1. “The Mbappe ,PSG comparison is ridiculous. Even without Mbappe PSG will win French league.”

Well… Lille won a few seasons back and Mbappe was playing.

        2. Donnarumma is earning 12m per year at PSG. That’s 60m over 5 years. It cost us 15m to sign Maignan and his salary is 3m. That’s 30m total over 5 years. Where are you getting 75m from?

      2. it’s easy actually, to prove your theory or your long writing about this, let’s us see next season.
if Maldini & Massara still at Milan, then redbird for whatever reason you may say, still need them.
        as simple as that

    2. Who won Serie A last year and got to the CL semi’s this year.

Show me where your banter era accomplished this? Facts and statistics don’t really matter to you, some people just want to complain. It shows a lack of understanding of the situation, but it’s your right to do so.

You’re mostly wrong across the board, but there is no real point in arguing. Believe what you will.

PS. We’re all laughing at what you consider “quality players”.

    3. Only Juve spent more than us in the last 5 years!!!!lol.
Roma, Inter and Napoli spent more than us. Osimhen cost 41m.!!!!
      You’re a clown!!!!

      1. Bring up the numbers of every club before you speak and call people names.
You talk about Osimhen at 41 mil but the rest of Napoli players are bought for 20 mil or less. How much do you think Tomori cost, almost 35 mil when you include the loan fee, how about Leao when you include Thiago Djalo, how about Paqueta, Piatek, Kessie. Yeah Kessie was on loan the first 2 seasons Elliottpaid his fee, how about CDK, Tonali, Theo.
Now go check Napoli sales. They are in the plus after every mercato because they sell players to buy new players.
We are in minus after every mercato because the owners just give Maldini money without him selling anyone.
Most of you are upset of the Maldini criticism because you only live in the Milan bubble and have no idea how other clubs are able to buy players.
Napoli sold Koulibaly and Fabian Ruiz to buy Kvara, Kim, Olivera, pay for the loans of Raspadori and Simeone.
Super rich man city sold Gabriel Jesus, Zinchenko, Sterling to buy Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
Juventus sold Kulusevski and Bentancur to buy Vlahovic.
Maldini lost Kessie, Romagnoli Donnarumma Hakan for free, that’s why we have to watch Pobega, Kjaer/Thiaw, and Brahim Diaz trying to replace those players.
You can’t run a club in todays age with a sporting director that is incapable of selling players.
The times of Berlusconi and Morratti are over.

        1. Poli tell these Maldini boys the truth gazidis and Maldini were destroying milan moncada scouts so many quality players, enso martinis, Kolo muani, kravashelia, man city striker i forget his name the one from Argentina, either they don’t want to buy the players or they complain their price tag

        2. Again WTF are u talking about @Pioli lol. You constantly cite Napoli as the gold standard. But unless I am mistaken Napoli has won the Scudetto ONCE in the past 30 years (this season) – so not sure that is the gold standard we want to emulate. It’s easy to cherry pick specific years to support your argument. But what has Napoli done in the past 10, 20, 30 years with this magical management of theirs your so impressed with? Look where M&M took us in the past 4 years with a limited budget and owners who refuse to spend large money on transfers and with a wage cap. Come on man give it up. We get you hate Maldini for whatever reason but your rants are becoming comical. I could see if Maldini was towing the company line and supporting the owners saying they spend enough – BUT he’s NOT. He’s complaining on behalf of us fans for ownership to spend MORE money. He knows the side we could become if he were given the resources necessary to build it – unfortunately you cannot or refuse to see it. Give him the $$ and let him chose the players and THEN if he fails fire him. But you can’t have all these constraints on the man and then say he did a poor job. As Bill Parcells once said “can’t complain about dinner if you don’t let me buy the groceries.” You get it yet??? LOL. Cheers

    4. Calabria is good and Kalulu is a gem. He can play as CB or RB. Even tho I would use him as a RB. Florenzi is just a rotation player – you need those. You need players who are ok being on the bench and help if needed..

So RB – Maldini/ Massara wins

LB – Ballo is bad but hey .. Maldini signed Theo.. great job

Mid – Tonali is better than all players you mentioned. Tonali is actually a top player. One of the best CM in Italy. Maybe only Pellegrini or Barella are better.
Bennacer is also good. Very versatile player who can play CDM, CAM or typical CM.

I mean Muntari was horrible and Essien even worse during his time at Milan.
I am not sure if Maldini bought them but don’t forget Kessié, Calhanoglu.

So yes..another Maldini / Massara win.

Forwards – Leao is top! One of the best in the world right now.
Giroud is also good for his age but we definitely need a young and fast striker.

I mean..Maldini, Massara and Pioli are doing literally wonders..magic with the money they have. Not many could do this job with such low amount of money. Huge respect to them.

    5. WTF are you talking about @Piloi. You have gone off the rails man. You sound foolish lol. You say the same nonsense over and over and don’t want to listen what Maldini is saying because you obviously hate the man for whatever reason. Bottom line is we need to spend $$ this is obvious no matter who is the sporting director. It’s also not just about transfer spend it’s about having a WAGE CAP that prevents younger AND ESTABLISHED players that want to get paid from signing with us. It’s a combination of everything pal. Your just too blinded by hate to see it – similar to the Leao haters who said he wouldn’t sign and he would screw us over.

    6. There is nothing u can say about maldini mercato if redbird refuse to inject money what can he do .
All the players brought under his management r serie A champions.

    7. @poli.. you are like the Jon Snow of Milan fans LMFAO You know nothing.. Literally lol Whatever you do, just don’t fall for your aunt. LOL It’s gross. LMFAO

Did you just compare a scudetto winning, UCL semi playing team to our banter era? LOL You made up some serious delusional cr@p in your head that’s fueling an irrational hatred and I am just glad every actual Milan fan could see through it. lol Good luck with the hatred.

A SD can’t go ahead with signing a contract if he had to get a green light from Gazidis. That is why Maldini wanted the freedom for decision making. If Gazidis was here.. we would be losing bennacer, Kalulu, Leao and Tomori for free by now haggling for 50 cents. Look at the renewals this season ALONE. We renewed more players this season than the last 3 years under Gazidis.

Again.. don’t fall for your aunt Jon snow. Just saying LOL Therapy is an option y’know lmfao

      Forza Jon Snow. lol

  2. With Maldini we came second ,won the scudetto and this year made it to the semi’s of the CL ,beating Tottenham & Napoli reviving memories of Milan’s glorious past. True fans appreciate this and that is why there has been so much support for the team.
Sure mistakes have been made but Paolo is Paolo and only a handful of persons garner the incredible respect he does in all of football. For what he has achieved and how he has achieved it . Write something positive instead of something negative, we are all bummed out about losing to Inter but we will not forget how the team improved these last 3 years.

    1. We didn’t beat those teams you mentioned, we only escape them, if Leo was injury then, we gat no option, big thanks to our goal keeper, he was celebrated after every matches

      1. We beat Tottenham & Napoli made it to the semi’s deservingly . We played bad against Chelsea & Inter. Everyone agree’s that Milan need 6 new quality players including Maldini who publicly stated so, he also said the same thing after the scudetto victory.

  3. Imagine idio*s like Poli blaming Maldini for the departure of those out of contract players, Mladini isnt the one who hold the bank account you mor*n if the owner doesnt want to put the money necessary for extending contract what Maldini could do huh? your braincell must be at the size of peanut.

  4. My problem with Maldini and Massara is the lack of concrete plans.
As i said under another article, Maldini said he didn’t sign Dybala, even though it would have been cheaper and easier, because he didn’t fit the project of building a young and talented team.
But if you look at what he did in the same summer that was a lie, because he bought out 32 years olds Florenzi and Messias, and he also signed Origi, a free agent just like Dybala., who is just a year younger than Dybala.
Origi 4 mil, Florenzi 3 mil, Messias 1.5 mil + the transfer fees for the Florenzi and Messias that were 8 mil combined.
I think that Dybala makes 5 or 6 mil plus bonuses at Roma. 11g 7 assists so far this season in serie A, 4 g,1a in Europa league. He would literally be our most productive player and make other players around him more productive.
What has Origi, Messias, Florenzi given us this season? Its a waste of time to even get into the whole CDK deal.
How is signing those 3 older players in the plan of building a young and talented team but signing Dybala in his prime is not a good fit for the same project?
    He makes no sense

    1. It really is mind boggling. I’m a big fan of having Maldini as our main man, but that is just a horrible read on the situation.
He probably shouldn’t have said anything and he’s normally tight lipped.

Dybala signing was a huge missed opportunity

    2. These owners were NOT going to pay Dybala at his age 7M/season – and THAT is the REASON we didn’t sign him. Nothing to do with Maldini. It’s our FKN WAGE CAP and YOUTH POLICY

    3. “Would he have been appropriate and shared by our owners? No.”

Did you conveniently leave out that part of the quote that didn’t fit your narrative?

  5. Milan still needs time to improve, compare to the disastrous situation it was before maldini came. To be honest, they have been doing great according to statistics. From economical point of view and technical. But in this stage we need to go to the next level, we need a better head coach a better coaches especially in physical parts. As we suffered too much during these years. We have bennacer and tonali , i wish pioli was a more genius coach. Adli and de ketallar have a lot of potential but when you see krunic it is a waste of time seeing him play. To the conclusion maldi is great but he was also less experienced in the position. I hope he will stay and we will see pioli gone at the end of the july. Dont forget about zlatan. Maldini brang zlatan and he acted like a bomb in the dressing room.

  6. So many deluded fans on here who think that the glory days are back. Guys, the Scudetto and the CL semi were a flash in the pan, not true progress. Next season we will be back in the EL (if that!) and struggling to reach top 4. We have 3-4 players who are good enough to play for a top team, that’s it. And a coach whose level is Fiorentina. What do you think is gonna happen?

  7. For the warriors of the keyboard with numb skulls here is what Inter paid out since 2016/2017 to clubs in order to build their team:

    15 AS Roma €4.30m
    16 FC Luzern €2.50m
    17 FC Barcelona €1.00m

So yeah, they have been spending less than us, they been recycling way more money their ownership put in the team.

    1. Great comparison.
Just shows those Maldini/Massara haters that they have no clue what they are talking about.

I mean..2nd in league, SCUDETTO, UCL semi final!
Players like Mike, Theo, Tonali, Leao, Bennacer
I am even proud of Calabria, Tomori, Ibra and Giroud

      Cheap talents like Thiaw, Kalulu

And I truly believe that even CdK will shine in the next 1-2 seasons ..same as Leao did after 2 bad seasons

    2. You did an outstanding job crunching the numbers of players PURCHASED and SOLD for Inter,
You also did an outstanding job crunching the numbers for players PURCHASED by Milan, but for some reason, purposefully or accidentally, forgot to include the numbers of PLAYERS SOLD BY MILAN. Was there no data for Milan sales?
Also, why did you start crunching numbers from 2016/17 when Milan doesn’t have a single player from that season in the squad, or for that matter there is not even a
single player from the following 2017/18 season in the current squad with the exception of Calabria, who is a youth product.
Maldini, Massara and Piolis work are in question here, not Galliani’s and Mirabellis.

      1. Great! Both you dipsticks, chrisp and Poli, should start an economic class together, you’d be a smashing success.
You both don’t get all the nuances that go with buying and selling players. It’s not all black and white. You don’t get that M&M just started this cycle and you should wait another few years to see what they’ve achieved.
You got a glimpse with that Norwegian kid that they bought for 2-3m and sold for 15m last year.
But take Inter’s dealing of Lukaku for example. They bought him for 75.5m and sold him for 118m but brought him back for a loan of 20m. Ad all that and his wages and they barely broke even. And it goes on and on but the most important thing you too have missed is that Inter lost a record 280m last year but we lost 66m. This year we’re on track to turn a profit. Inter might slash 80m off their losses but will lose a lot.
But by all means keep it going Maldini is crap blah blah blah.

        1. Boom. That’s the bottom line. Meanwhile, Juventus cooking the books and constantly recapitalizing and that’s WITH their privately owned stadium. Barcelona 1bn euros in debt. It’s laughable. The only negative along this line for us now is missing out on the CL and that’s a responsibility I put 100% on Pioli, who despite all these transfer “misses” and “errors” we’re all arguing about, 100% has the squad to beat the likes of Cremonese and Spezia. Seriously, people if we’d just won three out of the games against Cremonese, Spezia, Empoli, Udinese, Bologna or Salernitana (and even Roma), we’d at least be tied with Juventus for second on 69 points or even second on 70 points. No one can seriously argue, despite all of our perceived “failures”, that we can’t beat Spezia or Empoli. So maybe we weren’t going to win the title this year, but failing to finish top 4 is 100% on Pioli. Sorry. We didn’t need Dybala to beat Cremonese or Empoli or Spezia. We didn’t need him to beat Napoli 4-0 or over two legs in the CL. We needed a coach who can beat the low block. Period.

          1. It is not squad value. To win match , you need score goal . You cannot sign atacker 35m euro that score 0 goal and use excuse he need adaptation 2-3 years thats mean you throw money 35m euro ( thats small for EPL club but big for AC Milan ) , signing origoat that have track record in liverpool with just few goal . Even if guardiola become coach with squad like CDK,Rebic,Origi,Junior mesias,Saladmaker,Brahim,Giroud he will have headache find way to score goal. You cannot just sign player just because you like that player without coordination with coach and just say : you must use and play this raw talent ,if fail thats not my business but you will sacked, if success thats will go all on my success alone. I understand why owner not trust maldini anymore because his failure this season . Both of Maldini & Pioli must out to take responsibility if AC Milan play on europa league

      2. Inter’s wages are way higher than ours and they are swamped in debt. The point is, dollar for dollar we did better than them. Our team didn’t have the same investment levels since Maldini was asked to slash our spending in half yet we still played in a champion’s league and won a title.

We been doing pretty well given the restricted parameters we asked to work with. If you check our net sales to purchase, we are behind Inter because they sold Lukaku and Hakimi, still they pay outragously high wages. our budget was 88 million theirs is 133…so do 45 million x 3 that is 135 million more than us since Maldini came in. Had we been given 135 million more in wages, I am pretty sure wed be dancing around ieth 3 straight scudettos

  8. Maldini wanted Botman, Sanches and Zaniolo (January). I would have liked to see our team with those 3 players. Yes Sanches and Zaniolo would have came with injury risk – but when your shopping for bargain deals because you don’t have lots of $$$ – that is unfortunately the risk you have to take. Would we have been better with Maldini’s first choices? I think probably yes. BUT Ownership didn’t give us the money so we moved to plan B – CDK, Thiaw, Poegba. Origi was a miss. Adli was purchased the year previously and never given a chance, same with Aster (never really given a fair chance). Yes we spent 35M (@Yelnats24 ;-)) on CDK – but at the time nobody complained as the scouting reports were very favorable. Unfortunately he didn’t show nor contribute much of anything this season. But like with all young players they NEED time to develop. So in 2-3 years we will know if he’s a bust or not – not now. What we do this summer will tell the story and future of our club. We made 75M from CL and should be given another 50M set aside for each transfer season. But let’s just say 75M. Now If every single penny is not put back into the side to invest in the squad that M&M want – then we know Redbird like their owners Elliot are all about profit and not titles. Atalanta is the model. Buy young, develop then sell. We shall see….I am not holding my breath.

  9. There is nothing u can say about maldini mercato if redbird refuse to inject money what can he do .
All the players brought under his management r serie A champions.

  10. Oh no, a Maldini article…you know what that means? A Poli essay/rant. But relax guys, I’ve figured it out. I’m 100 percent certain Maldini banged Poli’s mom….it’s the only legitimate explanation. there’s no way one person can hate another like that 😂😂😂

  11. Redbird must sell if they cant invest big time. Sell to owners who want to bring in hight quality players no matter what the price! Poor Maldini and Massarra! We as milan fans need to put pressure on redbird to sell the club or invest!!!!!

  12. We beat Tottenham & Napoli made it to the semi’s deservingly . We played bad against Chelsea & Inter. Everyone agree’s that Milan need 6 new quality players including Maldini who publicly stated so, he also said the same thing after the scudetto victory.

  13. The fact that the Technical Team of AC Milan found it profoundly difficult to replace Franck Kessie threw spanner in the works done by the Technica Department which comprises of Maldini,Massara and Mocanda but Elliott and Rebird wouldn’t bulge or we could have had better season like fighting for title and making it into the Champions League Final.

Without Kessie our defence was easily exposed and the midfield was not balanced,so moving forward I believe we need Kessie atypical player and Ruben Luftus Cheek could be really functional to fill the void left by the Ivorian as he has the built for such box to box functions.

    Thanks.

  14. I get that Maldini made some errors in judgement over the summer transfer but what’s he’s achieved over the past few years is incredible.

Milan is got back into Europe, Won the league and also got to the Semi final of the UCL.

Saying he should be sacked is just plain stupid.

One of the main problems he faced with renewals was Gazidis which was why why lost good players for free.

Now with Gazidis gone we can all see how he’s been able to renew the contracts of key players.

We might not have had the best transfer campaign this season but it’s not Maldini’s fault that Pioli can’t come up with a good strategy to break down defensive teams.

No one can tell me we don’t have a team capable of beating the likes of Spezia, Empoli, Udinese and Co.

With little experience Maldini has done wonderfully well.

  15. Even if Maldini leaves, and, someone else comes on board, the new guy would still have issues with the owners if they continue like this. Sack Pioli, and bring in Guardiola, he cannot work magic with this lot. Do they need Maldini to tell them to pump in money to the club they just bought? Maldini identified players needed in key areas, but, they were not ready to spend. Our bench is full of rotten players because that’s what the owners have left the coach and Directors with. Sometimes, you wonder who the coach is going to bring in to make an impact when we need goals – nobody? And yet they got this far. Maldini and the coach deserve a lot of credit for the impact they have made within a short time. We won the league, and, we were hopeful they would spend to bring in quality players considering the challenges ahead of the new season: scudetto defense, coppa Italia, and Champions league, yet, they were just satisfied with only CDK. Do these guys(investors) really know what they are doing? Kudos to the guys(players). They made us really proud.

  16. meanwhile Suso and Ocambos sent HI with Juve players to Maldini.
Maldini understand nothing in creating team, why someone will give him a chance to waste another season with zero tituli granted after last summer huge failure

  17. 2nd, title, semifinal!? it took a generation to achieve that, inter napoli Juve in no time win and repeat
