Matteo Gabbia experienced a dream night on Sunday as he was the derby winner for his boyhood club AC Milan, and further good news may arrive soon.

As MilanNews report, the winning goal in the derby against Inter is just the latest positive moment in Gabbia’s rise through the ranks at Milan, in addition to the excellent performance from a defensive point of view in front of Luciano Spalletti’s eyes.

As of today, it can be strongly argued that Gabbia is Milan’s most reliable central defender and has been since January onwards when he returned from his six months on loan at Villarreal, and the management want to reward him with a renewal.

Currently, the agreement between the player and the club ends in 2026 and the idea is to give him an extension and a pay rise, with discussions having been ongoing for months. He currently earns €1m net per season, which puts him amongst the lowest earners in the squad.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old himself will focus on building off a dream night on Sunday and getting in the starting line-up with more consistency, starting with Friday’s game against Lecce at San Siro which he will surely be a candidate to start in after neutralising Lautaro Martinez so well.

    1. agreed. He never looked like a future Nesta but i mean who is. lol. He was set to be a good defender, not a great one. BUT what a kid, humble, did the work, has gotten better. If he keeps improving, i do not see why he cant be a solid starting player or even a capt.

      1. No, he’s not a Nesta, but he’s got some traits of him. Assured and not scared to go to ground for a sliding tackle.

One of my beefs these days is the quality of defending, I mean 20 years ago you had Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Thuram, Zanetti, Samuel, Rio, Campbell, Vidic, Materazzi….they don’t make them like that anymore. It’s no wonder messi and Ronaldo scored so many…

        1. you are right. Moreover i think right now people focus on speed rather than technique. A lot of modern defenders, (i.e. Tomori) arent great technically but their speed paper over their cracks. The art of positioning and anticipation is getting lost. That’s not to say Thuram or Maldini or Cannavaro werent fast. lol They did it all. There is a reason why Cannavaro won golden ball. 🙂 . Gabbia might not get there, but hey if he gets 80% there, he’d be on my 11 any day

  1. Pioli stunted his growth at Milan. At least Milan have coach now that is willing to give opportunities to all players to grab

Well done Gabbia. All Rossoneri fans are proud of you even before Derby match and goal
