MN: Milan to be without Bennacer and Kessie for four weeks – a midfield signing is mandatory

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are in need of another reinforcement for the midfield given that Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer have national team commitments early in 2022.

As MilanNews writes, the African Cup of Nations will occur from 9 January to 6 February as CAF chose to postpone the competition due to Covid. Milan will lose Bennacer and Kessie because Algeria and Ivory Coast are two of the candidate teams to win the tournament.

Milan will have to make careful assessments to avoid being caught short for almost a month without both players. In addition to the permanent signing of Sandro Tonali from Brescia, the management will therefore have to move to find another option for the defensive midfield department.

With Soualiho Meite not deemed worth signing, the club will have to evaluate other profiles. The idea of retaining Tommaso Pobega – fresh from an excellent season with Spezia – and adapting him to that role is tempting, but these are evaluations that will be made during the summer. Some experience and quality to support Tonali is needed.
