MN: Milan’s defensive emergency worsens as Thiaw exits Dortmund game injured

By Oliver Fisher -

As if AC Milan’s injury situation couldn’t get any more farcical, Malick Thiaw came off injured in the second half of tonight’s loss against Borussia Dortmund.

Having come into the game in a defensive emergency, disaster struck in the 50th minute when Thiaw made a tackle while backtracking and pulled up clutching his hamstring. He could not continue, so Rade Krunic came on leaving question marks about who would slot in.

As MilanNews writes, the epidemic of injuries continues and especially in the defensive department. This time it was Thiaw who has gone down with an obvious problem in his hamstring, given that’s what he was holding.

That means that Simon Kjaer, Pierre Kalulu, Marco Pellegrino, Mattia Caldara and now Thiaw are on the sidelines, leaving Fikayo Tomori as the only fit recognised senior centre-back. The total injuries this season have risen to 27 as well, demonstrating the extent of the issue.

        1. I’m not an expert on this field, but I noticed many of our injuries (heck many injuries in football in general) are hamstring injuries.
This muscle is rarely properly adressed in many training regimens. The squat doesn’t work the hamstring, neither do the lunges, the leg press or the leg extension which are generally what people think of when training legs. To train the hamstring, you need a hinge type of mouvement (deadlift, romanian deadlift,…) and a knee-flexion type of mouvment (leg curl, nordic curl,…). Also hamstring need a lot of stretching because they can become “tight”.
If you neglect all these mouvements, your hamstring are gonna become weak and tight, and increase the risk of injuries during football games.
But again, I’m not expert in the field, this is just some random knowledge I collected through the years.

          1. Well deadlift helps the back alot even though the legs get involved. I’m no expert too but with my share of injuries I know some of the techniques and for which injury. I must say strengthening the knee is probably the best thing to do as once the knee is fine mostly all other potential injuries areas are corrected along with it. You hit the nail on the head with one the Nordic hamstring curl. The tibialis raise is the other complementary one to it. There are others ofc but I cant see how these ones which are more traditional aren’t incorporated already. I’m thinking it has to do with training methods 🤷‍♂️

  1. Sometimes changing things is the best solution, I think we are okay with pioli let him go bring someone with tactics that is unstoppable but this guy pioli can do nothing here. Wallahi if abate was promoted he will do better than pioli 😠
