MN: Motta one of two key candidates for the post-Pioli era at Milan

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are evaluating the position of Stefano Pioli, following the 2-2 draw against Salernitana, as well as potential replacements in the summer. Bologna’s manager Thiago Motta is one of two key candidates, a report claims.

Pioli is under heavy scrutiny after what has been a very disappointing first half of the season. The game against Sassuolo, scheduled for Saturday, could even be decisive for his immediate future as Milan could promote Ignazio Abate to caretaker.

As for next season, per MilanNews, Milan have two key candidates for the position: Thiago Motta (Bologna) and Francesco Farioli (Nice). The former appears to be the favourite thanks to his playing style, ability to work with young players and communication skills.

Vincenzo Italiano is also on the shortlist, as the report continues, but Napoli are very keen on him and this makes a Milan takeover unlikely. Either way, it will be difficult to find a replacement for Pioli mid-season unless it’s Abate, or potentially Antonio Conte if Cardinale wants to go down that route.

Bologna and Motta are just two points behind Milan in the standings, which says a lot given the difference in player material. They have also lost just two games this season, as opposed to the Rossoneri’s four losses.

    1. Another fantasy football fan detected lol. Xabi Alonso??? Hahaha. You really think that he will come to this miserable club where he has decent options across Europe?

Maybe we should try to Pep or Klopp as well ? Hahaha 🤣🤣🤣

  1. Italiano is nothing special, Pioli bear him at the height of a crisis, and Fiorentina does not have that weak a squad.

    Motta is impressive at Bologna.

  2. Game against Sassuolo will be decisive? What happens if we win that match lol? We are going wait for next failure? Can you see that we are the most embarrassing and miserable team right now? Board is like “Coach has lost dressing room looong time ago… Nevermind. Everyone is injured with muscle… Nevermind. Inter ra*ed us… Nevermind. We are out of UCL and Scudetto race by December… Nevermind” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can’t believe Cardinale’s board turn out to be such a joke

    1. This is a compound issue. It’s not all on Pioli. His tactics and subs are questionable, definitely.

Fitness and injuries aren’t on Pioli. They are on Fitness and Medical staff. They ought to replace those guys first and give Pioli’s the rest of the season.

Fitness and sharpness also comes from the training staff. Milan create a lot of scoring chances but have the worst conversion rate because players are either exhausted or mentally not sharp enough to score in front of goal… Pioli can’t do anything about players failing in front of goal…

Like I said, compound problems. So the objective should be to fix the most glaring issues first – INJURIES.

Replace Medical and Fitness first and see how that plays out.

      1. Pioli doesn’t rotate players. He’s equally at blame here. And also, he’s the head coach. The fitness staff work for him. They provide the program according to Pioli’s wishes. Don’t try to protect Pioli here because he sure ain’t innocent bystander here.

        1. I didn’t say he was. If you read above, I said it’s not ALL on Pioli. He has his faults. Yeah they work for him, but that doesn’t mean they know what the eff they are doing, clearly, given our crisis.

      2. Well said… I also think we need a sporting director (Not Moncada, who is technical director). The club needs someone that plans long term. I think that’s the main crises of the club. Removing Maldini for me was a mistake, but the club knows best. But what’s worse is not replacing him but sharing his job to Furlani and Moncada.

Motta, seems to be the alternative to Pioli. But I don’t know if replacing Pioli now would help given the depth of injury crises. Probably its best to replace the fitness and medical team (and this is where I expect Pioli to save his ass).
Anyhow the club decides to go, what I see fitting is: hire a sporting director ASAP, and at most, at the end of the season fire Pioli and replace him with someone like Motta.

  3. Do yoi remebwr Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival that led milan its mew Golory it was mid season in firing Fateh Terim who was much much better than this Envious and dull Old Cmilan Project Destroyer oach. As same as milan in Uefa Cup.
I told at the beginning of thr season when investing not to keep Pioli.
It is just like having Buy much Gold and Entrusting ithem to Mafia and Thiefs.

    1. Ancelotti wasn’t THAT good with us. He’s definitely a world class manager, and is going to be one of the best of all time, but mostly on the strength of his cup achievements. We went to three UCL finals and won two with him. We could have gone to five in a row if we hadn’t collapsed at Deportivo in 2004 and if Barcelona hadn’t been helped by the ref in 2006. However, 1 Serie A title in 9 seasons isn’t a great record for that squad. We should have won more Serie A titles during that time. Carlo’s strength is definitely managing high profile players in cups.
