MN: €37m, over two months and no goals – Nkunku gamble burdens Milan

Christopher Nkunku has been unable to make a difference for AC Milan so far, between needing time to improve his physical condition and failing to find the back of the net.

Milan’s signing of Nkunku came out of nowhere in the summer, striking an agreement with Chelsea at around €37m plus bonuses. In short, the Rossoneri paid a lot of money for the striker – as we highlighted in a recent bonus article, he’s the most expensive player on the team.

Yesterday’s performance, as MilanNews states, was yet another disappointing one for the Frenchman. Massimiliano Allegri and Igli Tare still believe that he can play as a centre-forward, but the performances so far tell a very different story.

The technical quality of Nkunku is obvious, but the problem is whether he can actually play in the striker role or not. At the end of the day, he’s not scoring any goals (none in the league so far) and that’s very costly for Milan, especially in a game like yesterday with huge chances missed.

Indeed, Milan chose to invest in a hybrid player with the hopes that he could adapt to the striker role, but the team is still crying out for a true No.9. So far, as such, the summer gamble hasn’t paid off and the Rossoneri could be left with a lot of regret.

  1. He’s a luxury player, plays in that Dybala type of role but is nowhere near as talented as Dybala so not sure what the point of this purchase was

He could do better if he played beside someone like a Giroud but why would Milan ever bench Leao and Pulisic to do that?

    1. Luxury player? 😀 😀 😀

Nope. It’s almost the same as calling Musah a luxury player. An overrated player who has shown nothing so far. I wouldn’t even use him as a sub as his contribution is big fat zero.

  2. We will have great difficulty parting with Nkunku when we realize that he is not the right player. Considering the excessive amount we paid for him, his age, salary and performance. We will probably lose between 20-30 million. A bad transfer made by Tare, at great risk and unnecessary.

  3. the issue with nkunku is he is the same player as before and needs to play as LW, he only has a right foot , and is too small to be in a pure striker role. his service just like giminez is limited. for me its play him in a 4 3 3 and he will make his money worth , play him 3 5 2 . pulsic and leao will take the spotlight , same with gimenez i feel

  4. Two things here.
    1. Nkunku was the wrong player type for what Allegri is trying to do. So whoever authorized this transfer is more to blame here.

    2. Allegri will never criticize his players or the fact that he’s lacking some, but he will put players in positions that aren’t suited to them to show th e]]e management that he is lacking the player he NEEDs. Nkunku is the best example of that. Can’t play with his back to goal, can’t play as a 9. Neither can Santi really…. Painfully obvious to see.

Hopefully the management sees what we see.

  5. Milan management creating unnecessary problems. Signing players that don’t fit is beyond ridiculous. When will they stop putting square pegs in round holes?

We didn’t need Nkunku. A smarter decision would have been to sign Icardi. I don’t understand why they got rid of Theo and Jimenez either. Allegri could have work with them on their discipline.

Getting rid of 2 quality players and replacing them with Estupinan and Bartesaghi is just stupid. Smh

    1. Theo was making too much money to be a discipline problem to be fixed. Not to mention that his on and off field attitude screamed that he didn’t want to be hear anymore. So now he can enjoy SA. I liked Jimenez, but only as a backup or fill in player. There’s nothing wrong with Bartesaghi. He’s solid and certainly playing smarter than Estupinan.

  6. A 10 year old could tell you Nkunku lacks the physicality to be a centre forward. Waste of money and not needed but not surprised as the same clowns in charge keep making mistakes. Decision not to renew Jovic is baffling.

  7. Assuming Leao has the left wing locked down, Nkunku would fit in the middle of a 4231 or as one of the forwards in a 442. We’ll never play either. He’s not suited to play in such a defensive system, he’s not Leao who can make things happen by himself.

  8. 37 mil down the drain. clowns in management cant help themselves. now him and gimenez is 70 mil. for this kind of money they could of bought someone who actually fits what allegri is trying to do.

  9. haha, did someone say he is useless in the summer right after he was signed. 🙂

    go back and check it

He got broken in the legs two times, dragonball meme and some dude said he is “great and healthy”. Loll

    1. Those Mercato salivators I swear smh
Where King22? Lol this guy only comments during transfer windows. Pretty sure he’s a plant

  10. guys, listen,

This player is useless, No Matter what positions he plays, LW, CF, SS, RW, he is not gonna do well. and He is Kunku

just release him to the small teams

  11. I don’t think he did badly yesterday.
He got an Assist to set up Saelemaekers.
Several times he was in good positions but the passing to him was poor.

I do think we needed a different profile of player. But also don’t think he’s failed. I’m more concerned about Gimenez.

  12. If Milan wants to nkunku exploded, they should change the formation with 3-4-2-1. I think that formation will be sweet for nkunku / leao. Both typically wants a room to dribbles / assists to gimenez.
