MN: Probable Milan XI to face Torino – Pioli choosing between two systems

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will begin their Coppa Italia campaign tomorrow night against Ivan Juric’s Torino at San Siro hoping to reach the quarter-final stage.

MilanNews writes that Milan will be without 10 players for the game: Maignan, Rebic, Kjaer, Origi, Ballo-Touré, Krunic, Florenzi, Ibrahimovic, Vasquez and Malick Thiaw, the latter of whom is suspended due to a ban that carries over from Germany.

There are two possible choices for Pioli for the match against the Granata. The first is the classic 4-2-3-1, with Gabbia in place of Calabria and Kalulu moved to the right, with Dest in place of Theo on the left. Tonali and Pobega would be in the midfield, with De Ketelaere leading the line to let Giroud catch his breath.

The other hypothesis is a 3-5-2, with Saelemaekers and Dest at wing-back and a three-man midfield formed by Tonali, Vranckx and Pobega. Diaz and De Ketelaere would be the front two in that system, and further indications should arrive tomorrow.

Probable Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Tatarusanu; Kalulu, Tomori, Gabbia, Dest; Tonali, Pobega; Saelemaekers, Brahim, Leao; De Ketelaere.

Probable Milan XI (3-5-2): Tatarusanu; Kalulu, Gabbia, Tomori; Saelemaekers, Vranckx, Tonali, Pobega, Dest; Brahim, De Ketelaere.

  1. Whatever lineup Pioli tries to use, he still has to play a right back on the left.
Napoli needed a backup right back and signed one on loan on the first day of the transfer window, while we are still waiting 4 years later for Paolo to bring a back up left back

  2. You need to give Leao more rest. When we lose him due to injury Milan will lose champions league spot. Milan is not far away from there. Coppa should be used for resting best players.

  3. Saelemaekers as LW and Dest as RW to give Leao some rest. Giroud on the bench until 60mins and if (LOL) Milan hasn’t scored yet then bring him in.

Not sure if Pioli dares to drop both Leao & Bennacer from the starting 11 – even if everyone thinks they need some rest before it’s too late.

  4. Need a left back for sure as back up. Meanwhile monza are close to getting juranovic from celtic… For around 7 million i last heard… Would’ve been a decent back up. Or then theres that scottish player i think who plays for empoli? Another cheap option surely. A left back and a striker. We need a new inzaghi. Poacher menace

  5. Wow. Neither of those lineups has any chance. We went the Tonali- Pobega midfield last time against Torino and they bossed our midfield. I guess Pioli didn’t learn from that. If we are not seriously trying to win this game then why not just rest everyone. Give Leao the game off. Try out the young keeper.

  6. Looks good. Worth giving Dest a run out at LB. There’s been plenty of right fooded LB’s throughout history. Panucci played LB in the final against Barca.

It will also be good to test CDK upfront. Again these makeshift moves can sometimes make a player. Look at Kalulu.

We don’t need to sign a new player every time someone gets injured. What’s the point in having the rest of the squad?

  7. I think rafael leao is need of a break and this is the time to do so..in the last game he looked a bot phased and his desicion making was poor ..Same with Olivier Giroud and I am a great fan of his ,but rest then both for this game only ..Plenty of goals to come from Olivier and some big games coming up,..
I am quite pleased with salemakers at the moment and have confidence in him ,it’s just sometimes his final pass goes astray ,,but his game is improving .in fact last game he looked better than leao .
I am not knocking Rafael leao ,as he is a top class player and we need him ..just a rest will do.
We can challenge for the scuddeto again this season all is not lost lost ..We have some big games coming up …
