Tonight’s game against Red Star in Belgrade will be yet another test of Alessio Romagnoli amid a run of inconsistency, a report claims.
We provided a forensic analysis of Milan’s Romagnoli enigma earlier in the week, taking a look at the evidence we have seen, the intangibles such as having the armband and what the solution might be.
Now, MilanNews also take a look at Romagnoli’s situation, highlighting that it has been a season with fluctuating performances and criticism that has come despite excellent results for the team.
Since returning to the team for the first game against Inter on October 17, Romagnoli has always been a regular in Serie A aside from two games: Hellas Verona where he was injured and against Atalanta where he was suspended. In both games, Milan did not win.
The argument from an element of the fan base is that Romagnoli lacks consistency against high-level teams and individual opponents. There has also been some discussions about the 26-year-old’s personality, with accusations he is not vocal enough to be the true leader of the team and to wear the armband.
Nonetheless, he will start tonight against Red Star in what is another gesture of faith from Stefano Pioli that the captain can guide the team through a potentially difficult game.
Romagnoli’s contract at Milan expires in less than a year and a half, in June 2022, and with Mino Raiola his agent it will not be an easy renewal. Talks are underway but are still in their infancy, though it is worth noting that the former Roma man has a market value of €30-35m – not an insignificant amount.
