MN: Tomori goes back to basics after a difficult year and raises his level again

By Oliver Fisher -

In order to win games consistently and fight for trophies a solid defensive effort is needed, something AC Milan didn’t have for patches of last season.

MilanNews recall that it was back on 22 January 2021 that Milan finalised the loan signing of Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea. The Englishman immediately showed his qualities with a series of good performances, so the Rossoneri thus decided to buy him permanently at the end of the season.

Chelsea fans showed great disappointment at the decision to sell the defender who has since become a pillar of Milan’s rearguard, and in the following season his performances were decisive for the conquest of the Scudetto.

In the first year and a half the defender made the Rossoneri fans fall in love with his aggressive and courageous style of play. However, something went wrong and last season Tomori floundered in a Milan side that were not brilliant on a defensive level.

It was not only his fault of course, but the expectation that he had created in all the fans was not met. Fast forward to 27 September 2023, and things are looking a lot brighter.

Tomori scored the goal to make it 2-1 against Cagliari and certified a start to the season that sees him back at a high level. Despite the red card in Rome where he could certainly have been more cautious, Tomori has demonstrated in these first outings in Serie A and the Champions League that he is reliable.

The statistics speak for themselves and are on his side: 53% of duels won, almost 6 recoveries on average per game. He has also committed zero serious errors leading to goals and has 93% pass completion rate.

In short, Tomori seems on the right path to return to being the player who was the best defender in the Scudetto season.

  1. That’s if the critics here will agree that Tomori is Milan best defender since his arrival.
The will always find a way to paint something white black. But u know what, your opinions can go to the gutter.

Napoli are accepting fans that are good with criticism and mockery, you can join them so that you will freely mock and criticise you best player in the clubs official social media accounts.

  2. Milan best defender is Maignan, not Tomori.
And if you exclude Maignan and just rate the outfield defenders, saying Tomori is Milan best defender since his arrival is the same as saying he is the tallest midget. Milan defenders are not that good to begin with.
Also, This is a platform for Milan fans where they can openly and objectively discuss all matters Milan, not an official team social media account or players personal socials. The problem is that a lot of grown people in here are worshipping these players and every little criticism Is taken as blasphemy in their mind. If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
This is Milan we are talking about. In a big club players get criticized if they underperformed.

  3. Tomori isn’t anywhere near his Scudetto form, but he has shown some signs of improvement (despite that red card). But that’s just the thing, there has to be competition for the starting shirt for him to improve his play.
