MN: Why a door has opened for Milan to potentially appoint De Zerbi

By Oliver Fisher -

It seemed destined to remain a pipe dream a few months ago, but in the last few days the idea of Roberto De Zerbi becoming the next AC Milan boss no longer appears as unrealistic as it did.

As MilanNews writes, this is not the season that De Zerbi thought he would experience at the helm of Brighton. After proving to be one of the big surprises of the last Premier League campaign, the Seagulls have slowed down this year.

The ‘surprise factor’ seems to have gone while they have had to deal with long absences for their star players, without failing to consider the difficulties posed by the transfer market and the replacement of some valuable pieces that Brighton were unable to keep such as Moises Caicedo.

In recent weeks Brighton seem to have deflated rapidly: having been battered in the Europa League round of 16 by Roma, they are struggling domestically too.

Yesterday they lost 3-0 at Bournemouth, which followed a 4-0 loss to city, a 1-1 draw with relegation-battling Burnley and a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City, and the league table says that they are 12th.

Some of the momentum that suggested De Zerbi would coach a top European club next season has gone, but the options have decreased too.

Barcelona have decided to keep Xavi after having jumped through hoops, Chelsea’s plans for Mauricio Pochettino are not yet clear while Bayern Munich look like going down the Ralf Rangnick route.

It is a potentially ideal scenario for the top Italian teams looking for a coach for next season (above all, Milan and Napoli) to be able to tempt De Zerbi, especially for the Rossoneri given his self-confessed attachment.

  1. If not motta or conte i hope for him, could be very intersting to see what he could do after a good mercato(hopefully) with a really good squad

  2. Every week the narrative changes. Literally. LOL!!! Every single week.

Curious what new names pop out this week. And who’s “ahead”.

Frankly feels like no one knows what’s really going on. Quite possibly not even Milan brass themselves. LOL!!!

If last summer is anything to go by, then Milan is possibly working quietly to appoint the next coach and players.

The rest can possibly just be noise.

    1. I think Lopetegui was for real. ESPN and Italian Football Podcast picked that up.

Was it like this when Pioli was appointed? All the chaos and speculation? I started following ACM at the beginning of Pioli’s tenure.

  3. By the start of Euro 2024 the coach shuffling would finish and Milan will be still left hanging. We will still be reading articles like these by the time Euro 2024 is over and still no coach.

  4. Don’t know why all the hype around him. He didn’t won anything. Ukranian super cup. Big wow.

And his teams leak goals same as Pioli’s. Might as well stay with him and save 15 millions.

    1. Yet another terrible take or are you just living under a rock 🤣 He didn’t win anything in Ukraine because of the war. Top of the table when the season was cancelled.

      1. Brighton are 12th in the table and have already shipped 52 goals this season. Last year they were 6th and shipped 57 goals.

I want to get excited about this guy as so many here seem to really rate him. What am I missing? What should I look for if I watch a Brighton game?

        1. He got screwed after macalister and caicedo left and injuries galorez this year… if can work out a deal on the relase id prefer him ovwe motta.

He is that kind of level, and formation wise much more suited than conte. To which ithink, contes’ 3man defense, non use of winger means too much redo fo the squad and we might regret that deeper….. and conte…. Is “meh” last few years too….

Leave room to upgrade next year of after and go for a klob if not working out.

      2. You are a terrible take. He won Ukranian super cup with Shakhtar in season 21/22. Don’t reply just for the sake of an insult. It makes you look weak.

        1. What is terrible about my take exactly? He’s shipped 100+ goals while finishing no higher than 6th in last two years.

If UCL excellence is one of our goals then where is the track record? Clearly it is not there. Ukraine is certainly a data point.

I believe we can agree.that Seria A is much stronger league than the Ukraine league.. we have a coach that lead us to second so far after finishing 5th last year and going to the semis in UCL. This year we are 2nd. In both seasons we will ship 20-ish less goals.

Last season he has MacAlliatoe a d Cacido. Still shipped 52 goals. This season he is without and is shipping 70+ most likely.

Pioli has regularly played with 3rd and 4th choice CBs. He was missing Benny the first half of the season and then Benny is not fully back ev n now.

Pioli in 2nd. De Zerbi in 12th as it stands today.

I do believe we need a new coach. I just don’t see.hkw De Zerbi is an upgrade and why I should get excited. Honest question.

So instead of telling me I am terrible how about offering me an analysis I can use to at least understand your position.

BTW weak is when you slap someone in the face then cower and say things like “don’t hit me back”. Check the mirror Ted.

De Zerbi does not look like an upgrade. Only a prodigal son. So I ask again, what s

  5. I would hope that he would at least be a serious option but just like with players. Milan are always linked with a new person every other day, and then rumours suddenly stop and we end up with a person well below the skill level of who we were mentioned with.

At this point I don’t know who will come or who is available. I just want someone who can actually start a project and build this team to become winners.

Lopetegui and faresca are two guys that I think would be fired before mid season, just my opinion and I can be totally wrong. But whoever comes I must always support until there’s a reason not to. Everyone is always deserving of a chance. It’s just how optimistic I am with them lol.

If milan were very ambitious they would go all out for klopp. I know he said he’s taking a year off but if you showed him an intriguing project maybe he would change his mind

    1. Its not that and there is nontelling there has been no approach…

But thisnguys amrun itnkike financia deals.. no talk about… just negotiate and anounce.

Same with pioli, hes gone.. hell be gone a more normal way under the terms of milan ownership. Quick and a proper anounce when it happens and apreciarion forr days… this is very positive ans an organization and shows future prospecs (playes or coaches) milan runs it profesionally and proper even when its about parting ways ….With dignity.

  6. I never bought the extent of the RDZ hype that existed before the recent heavy defeats. I dont believe the hype was justified by a record that is unremarkable once you scratch the surface.

EDF took Sassuolo into Europe before RDZ started there. Brighton had a side that was almost certainly top 8 which made it into Europe. His feats at these clubs were not major over achievements.

But this is nitpicking when comparing him to the other top up and coming coaches (who I prefer). There is no doubt that RDZ can coach and develop talent. While this could be said about Lopetegui, too, RDZ is also at the forefront of tactical innovation at the moment (for better or worse).

I have my reservations about whether he would be worth the likely cost but that’s fundamentally not an issue for a fan. If management can sort out the money, so be it.

I’m not going to complain about an appointment which looks something like the Sacci, Capello and Ancelotti appointments. That is a young / untested / developing coaches with new ideas.

I can live with the potential failure of RDZ. It’s a bold appointment that befits the next evolution of the project. It’s consistent with what Milan does which results in success. The same cannot be said of Lopetegui which has all the hallmarks of being a decision that is fundamentally unrelated to the football.

The whole point of sacking Pioli is to move the project forward, not to embrace the status quo.

    1. Agree, tactical innovation, evolution, passion, excitement, boldness, the guy is not hyped only by fans, even top managers we all know had glowing reviews about the guy, coming from a boring uninspiring period, all we need is excitement, xabi, de zerbi, amorim, arne slot, arteta, motta are the young prospects you can expect to go on and have big careers, if we can get one of them and grow together with him, (de zerbi is the only one possible), exactly like the comment above, that is milan tradition, but ofcourse winning serie a next season is our obssession, then hire conte and sell the many wingers and full backs we have and replace them with wingbacks, everything else will be a boring uninspiring appointment

    2. Thank you @Bruno this is what I’ve been looking.for. The excitement isn’t in the results but the innovation tactically.

Now i can go look for.info about this and watch a couple of games.

  7. 8. RDZ dropped quietly into Potters shoes with a Thankyou ,didn’t need to do much and didn’t .,got to 2nd in pure potter style .. TB picked up several hundred millions and wasted a bundle on 4/10 s .,with third world physio a number of players bought in their own ,others decided to go as well ..1980s saw a cup final and replay and the chairman sold up his best and ran …how will TB fare …balls in his court with RDZ wanting Milan or Italy anywhere and his team in free fall
