MN: Why Pioli is increasingly likely to field a 3-5-2 formation against Inter

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli seems likely to change to a three-man defence for tonight’s game against Inter, according to a report.

MilanNews report that the recent struggles have forced Pioli to look an new tactical solutions, with both the 3-5-2 and the 4-3-3 tried during the week ahead of a game against an Inter side that have a three-man defence and midfield.

Why the 3-5-2? The simultaneous absences of fundamental players in the build-up such as Mike Maignan, Fikayo Tomori and Ismael Bennacer and the potential to use Junior Messias as a midfielder are the direct consequences of the numerical and qualitative difficulty that the team are facing.

The possible exclusion of Rafael Leao from the starters could generate some headlines, but the Portuguese winger appeared to be physically exhausted in recent games and a more physical pairing of Divock Origi and Olivier Giroud would allow – at least on paper – greater physicality in individual and aerial duels.

There is still a chance that the 4-3-3 could prevail and that Leao could start with Tonali, Krunic and Pobega or Vranckx in the midfield, but at the moment the three-man defence is the favourite.

  1. Hope the change of tactics bring the new life to Milan. We really need a change of scenery and the formation is indeed a good place to start (although a bit gamble for the derby, but why not)

Can’t imagine being Pioli now. Damned if he do change things and damned if he doesnt change things

  2. Where there is Promotion there is Demotion
And where there is Praise there is Negative
So we Have Seen only Praise and Promotion.
Pioli,Maldini And Masara Do not know How to use what they have effectively and They also Do’nt Know how to Sell at the Approporiate time.
    So there is Decision Crisis

    1. Totally agree. I would get rid of Maldini and Massara before even firing Pioli. Just look at the players that left Milan on a free transfer? Donnarumma, Calhanoglu, Kessie and Romagnoli. Players that we could at least got 100m for to reinvest in the squad. Also, why sign an underperforming Messias and an injury prone Florenzi? Two players that Milan should have never made their loan permanent because it will be hard to sell them. Spending 35m on CDK who wasn’t even playing in any of Europes top leagues is irresponsible especially since we already signed Adli for AM. So what was the point in signing Adli? We could have got Dybala on a free transfer. Replace Kessie with Amrabat, keep Romagnoli for another year and get Belotti over Origi on a free transfer.

  3. Bench Leão is really some high risk gamble… The man is by very var out greatest creative force, since CDK is not delivering the goods yet… But on the other hand he’s really putting some horrid displays lately… Well, I dunno, let’s pray 🙏 for the best.

  5. Just watched came here to see the number of people who do not realize we already play a variant of a 3 at the back including a 3-5-2 when in attack. Or that formations are miracles like.im FiFa or FM

    1. And yet that seems to be the very problem doesn’t it? We effectively play with 3 at the back and then get totally overwhelmed. So say what you will about the relative irrelevance of formations, the way we’re playing now is terrible, and the answer is not to dig further in to the 3-5-2, as it doesn’t solve the issues of our quasi-3-5-2, never mind that it literally benches our best player by default since he’s terrible centrally. Instead I endorse a true 4-3-3, and contrary to what this article says is the formation mostly likely to be used against Inter because we just don’t have the necessary CBs to play it given Tomori’s injury, Kjaer’s age/recent injuries, and Kalulu’s ineffectiveness.

  6. Correction: Instead I endorse a true 4-3-3, and contrary to what this article says is the formation mostly likely to be used against Inter because we just don’t have the necessary CB *quality/depth* to play *3-5-2* given Tomori’s injury, Kjaer’s age/recent injuries, and Kalulu’s ineffectiveness.
