Former AC Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo has called for a bit of a reality check this morning, asking for a re-look on the season depending on next week.
There is a very possible chance that Milan do the double this year, winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. However, whether it would be classed as a good year is something which many Rossoneri supporters are finding difficult to assess.
On one hand, the club have been poor across many departments – the mercato was questionable, the results have been woeful, and generally, targets have not been met. However, success has still arrived this year.
It is certainly a difficult one to weigh up, the price of success against the debt of failure, though we are getting ahead of ourselves slightly.
Ahead of the final, Montolivo spoke to Sky Sport about the win against Bologna on Friday, and what success in the final would be, via Milan Press.
“Milan’s season couldn’t be bad with two trophies. I finished eighth and I didn’t win any trophy with Milan, for God’s sake, but my team didn’t have the quality that this team has. There is regret for the unexpressed potential of these players. And we will notice it when Milan watches the Champions League on TV without playing it next year.”
“The trophy that he won and the one that will be played on Wednesday is played because the quality of the squad is high and when the concentration is there, the performances arrive. It is no coincidence that Milan has played five times against Champions League finalist Inter and has never lost.
“This means that the quality is there, but if you are not able to put it on the field when you want and you depend on what happens on the field, this unfortunately is a limitation for the team.”
2 trophy but both side seems doesn’t want to continue working with each other.
Indeed. The skills and quality is there but it means nothing when the motivation and work ethics are lacking.
That’s exactly the point! Milan wins when it wants to. This shouldn’t be. The players aren’t disciplined enough, I feel. We can’t be unbeaten against Inter, we can’t beat a huge team like Madrid at Home and still be in 8th position in the table…. We definitely play when we want to. It’s embarrassing
I’m not surprised that Montolivo, one of the weakest midfielders in the history of the Milan club, has a looser mentality. He was captain in the banter era and that says it all.
