Moretto: Breakdown of the bonuses involved in Chukwueze’s move to Milan

By Ben Dixon -

After arriving from Villarreal in the summer of 2023, Samuel Chukwueze has struggled for AC Milan. However, his performance against Fiorentina has shown a sign of what the Nigerian can produce, and it is hoped he will build on that performance in weeks to come.

Arriving as the most expensive incoming of the mercato always adds pressure to a player, and the arrival of Chukwueze was no different for Milan. There can be several comparisons made between his arrival and that of Charles De Ketelaere’s 12 months prior, given both struggled in their debut season after joining the club for a significant fee.

It will be hoped that the eventual outcome with the winger will be different to the path that the Belgian took in the summer, though, after De Ketelaere has impressed heavily elsewhere in Serie A. Instead, if the 24-year-old can build on his performance from this weekend and become a consistent threat for the Rossoneri, the future will be bright.

On his X account, Matteo Moretto has given some insight into the Chukwueze deal and the bonuses included. The total fee was €19.5 million, but there is also an additional €8.5m to be earned through bonuses.

Firstly, there is potentially €3m in appearances bonuses to pay, and then also a team bonus goal, where Milan’s performances in Serie A and Europe will activate different amounts. Moretto has stated that at the end of this season, Milan will owe the Spanish outfit around €1.5m in bonuses.

    1. Don’t get too ahead of yourself, only two good performances doesnt mean hes season was a a success, he needs to perform next week as well

  1. For some reason I feel like Atalanta won’t redeem CdK. It’s like he’s turning back into the Milan CdK at Atalanta. I don’t know how he’s going to fit into this team if he’s not redeemed but perhaps he can be used as a playmaking CF.

    1. Have a feeling that CDK is down in the pecking order now that Toure is back from injury and that Toure is more compatible with Scamacca.
It wouldn’t be great if Atalanta doesn’t pay but I don’t think it would be hard to place him elsewhere for the same amount. He’s improved his image quite a bit. I also doubt we’d keep him.
It would be funny if it ends up being a swap between CDK and Scamacca, and we find ourselves next year with Scamacca, Jovic and Okafor as strikers. I have very conflicting thoughts about Scamacca…

      1. So, I’ve been promoting Scamacca, but I hear you. I don’t think his ability is in question. He scored a great goal vs. Napoli. I think his problem is attitude. He just doesn’t want it as badly as he should. Perhaps being at a club like Milan will wake him up. The Scamacca solution would allow us to save money on ST, for use elsewhere. Big risk, but big reward if it works out.

        1. I don’t know about that. I did like the Sassuolo Scamacca but since then he’s been blowing hot and cold. The advantage with him is that he is Italian, so less problems in UEFA lists and overall less money on wages. But overall I don’t think he is the striker we’re looking for.

  2. Any comparison to CDK’s first season are not really fair. CDK was continually given opportunities. Game after game.
Chuk has mostly starts in fully rotated line ups or a few appearances in the last 20 minutes of games. Fiorentina was the first time he was given a start in a strong line-up.
