Tuttosport: Chukwueze struggling as De Ketelaere did – Milan cannot repeat same mistake

By Oliver Fisher -

Samuel Chukwueze is having a difficult first season at AC Milan after being the most expensive signing of the last summer transfer window.

As Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) recall this morning, Chukwueze arrived from Villarreal for €20m plus €8m in bonuses and has not performed as everyone would have hoped to this point.

His tally reads two goals: one against Borussia Dortmund at San Siro and then the winner in the 2-1 victory at Newcastle which in the end secured a spot in the Europa League. Aside from that, just one assist, and no goals in the league.

Everything is amplified by Christian Pulisic’s contrasting form. The two were expected to compete for the starting role on the right win but the American is performing at a completely different level. Pioli even said it recently.

“The difference between Pulisic and Samu? They play in the same position and have the same characteristics. Pulisic, however, works, assists and scores. Chukwueze must score goals, assists and work,” he said.

During the next three games – namely the two legs against Slavia Prague and the home match against Empoli – Pioli will have to rely on Chukwueze again to avoid the risk of overworking Pulisic given his injury history.

This is why on Thursday evening the Nigerian winger might start on the right, joined with Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao in the front three against the Czech side.

The paper concludes by drawing a comparison between Chukwueze and Charles De Ketelaere, who was also the marquee signing of a summer window and experienced first season struggles.

Even though there were many layers to the De Ketelaere enigma, Milan cannot make that same mistake of revoking their confidence in a player who clearly has talent to be exploited.

  1. And who insisted to sign him last summer? We almost moved on to another potential RW player bc we’re not really convinced. But alas… we eventually signed him. Maybe one of management’s low cost buying to complete the puzzle of available budget right 😀

  2. Chuk needs more minutes but also needs to step up and not be afraid to take defenders on. We already know he will excel at Atalanta. It’s like we’re scouting for the Bergamo side LOL!!!

  3. It would be wise to wait for a more competent coach before selling anyone based on this team’s performances. Pioli is not really a good coach to guide youngsters specially offensive ones. Dude couldn’t figure a single offensive tactics in 5 years so it’s foolish to expect he would improve offensive players.

  4. Personally I’d like to see Saelamakers come back. He is 24 and scored 4 goals and 3 assists last year. He is a like for like with Puli as an all action RW.

Best of all, he costs nothing, is already adapted to Serie A and playing at Milan.

Chuk to Atalanta on a loan sounds great if they will take him. Though I don’t see him playing wing back for Gasparini. Gasparini demands players know where to be and hustle. If Scamaca can’t get in the side I don’t see Chuk doing it with the expectations of playing Defense.

  5. Can Pioli really guide these young talented offensive players? I don’t think so. Rather than selling talented players, I would rather replace Pioli.

Don’t get me wrong, he is a decent tactician but Milan need more than “decent”.
