The derby between Inter and AC Milan tomorrow night risks being decisive for the immediate future of Paulo Fonseca as head coach, Matteo Moretto has confirmed.
Milan have had a far from ideal start to the 2024-25 season under their new manager having won just one of five games, with nine goals conceded and the most recent blow being a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League where the damage could have been a lot worse.
Virtually every major source is reporting that Fonseca is under real pressure to deliver a positive result and performance in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday night otherwise there is a high chance that he will be sacked after just six games.
Moretto gave an update on the situation linked to Fonseca’s future during a column for the Daily Briefing and he confirmed that there needs to be signs of progress tomorrow.
“The results, and the way the results have arrived, has not satisfied the hierarchy at AC Milan. The game against Inter will be an important game for him, as Fonseca must respond on the pitch and with results,” he said.
“After the Milan derby, the board will evaluate Fonseca’s position, in a very thorough and concrete manner. What I can say is that Milan had a plan for how to replace Stefano Pioli, which was not carried out in the end. So they had to take a different path and find a different solution.
“Milan are working on potential alternatives, but without real purpose yet, as they want the focus to be on the derby, and they do not want to destabilise the situation more than it is now. But it is true that, like any team that may need a quick solution, they are working out their options.
“We’ll see who that is. Lots of names are coming out, there are some that various rumours are coming out about, but not all of them are correct. For example one that I would rule out is Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund manager.
“He simply went to see their match against Liverpool in the Champions League. Right now, I have no indication that he is on their agenda.”
Sarri or tudor are the only options more or less..a coach unfamiliar with serie a is gonna flop. “Proven winner” will ask for 2 high a salary.
Fonseca is familiar with Serie A from earlier. That hasn’t helped so far.
Managing this disfunctional team will require a lot of work and time from both the new manager and the players. It will take a while to get the results.
We don’t have Pioli’s salary to pay but will have Fonseca’s.
We need someone who won’t take shit from the players. Let’s see if that is Tuchel and what his plans can be for Pulisic who has been consistent in scoring goals and assists for us compared to his time in Chelsea.
Familiar, sure.. but he wasn’t very good at it the first time around. His style does bode well here.
Team is fine. Little unbalanced but can be made to tick right with someone who will play to their strengths. Look we are are the same as last season, didn’t lose any key players. Finished second, scored 76 goals. This has to count for something. They didn’t forget how to play football over summer , right?
I’d take tuchel but highly doubt redburd would pay his salaries, that’s like 3 times what fonso gets.
Puli is an undisputed starter, probably the only one in this team atm. During Chelsea he wasn’t fit
We more importantly need someone who gets the players on board. Nowadays the players have such a strong position, if you get shit from them and it is more than 1 or 2 isolated players you are basically done.
Much more realistic to go the friendly way with the players.
Tuchel is the worst possible candidate in that regard.
Milan management really wise. 2 candidate they choose in summer have good ranking. Lopetegui rank 14 in primier league. Fonseca rank 10 in serie a. Both of them bring their club out of relegation zone, really great achievement.
I don’t know man… I can’t believe we’re in this position after management had a YEAR to figure out the upgrade on Pioli. So many better names were available.
From the names available, I would give Sarri a shot. At least he’s won before and is familiar with the league… The foreigners mentioned are just as much of a gamble as Fonseca.
