Moretto: Moncada set for more power – three-year renewal and ‘international surprises’ ready

By Oliver Fisher -

The dust continues to settle after the news emerged that Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara have been sacked by AC Milan, with a plan for the future emerging.

MilanNews and other reliable sources are reporting that Gerry Cardinale has decided to sack Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara from their position as technical and sporting director respectively.

According to Matteo Moretto of Relevo, Geoffrey Moncada will be the ‘future’ of the management moving forward. The ownership greatly appreciate his work and they have offered the chief scout a three-year renewal.

Some summer targets will now change, as the owners will not go for profiles such as Bologna striker Marko Arnautović or Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi, presumably because of the fees involves and their respective ages.

However, Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Eintracht Frankfurt playmaker Daichi Kamada are still on the list, while Moretto adds that there will be ‘international surprises’ without going into great detail on what that means.

  1. “there will be ‘international surprises’”

Nope. Surprise would be getting even one new Italian player. Let me guess the surprise… They’ll buy a 20-year-old prospect from Ligue 1?

  2. This speaks volumes.
Moncada gets a 3 year contract off the bat, but RedBird only gave Maldini and Massara 2 year contracts last season.
They were planning to get rid of them since last year.
And when you take into consideration that the new CEO is from Elliott, it means that blth the new and the old owner weren’t fans of Maldini.

  3. Arnautović and Berardi will not come to Milan anymore. Moncada will only bring players like Enzo and Muani.
Redbird’s decision sucks, we are done.

  4. Last season signings was disaster. Apart from one. You need to admit it. So they had their chances they missed badly (do we need to repeat?) and they are fired. I am not too happy about it but I do understand the logic.
Now the question is not about “who” but about the “goals”. If the goal is next year scudetto — I am totally for giving other professionals chance to bring us there

    1. You can’t judge the result of mercato just by 1 season. Looking only at the first season, Leao’s signing was’t success either.

  5. No no no Loftus to Bring to us he is the worest every one who lovea milan with Education and Experience got Surprised the reports of Loftus Cheek linking acmilan
He is Injury Prone ,he is 27 yrs of age,
    He earns alot
    He coasts more than 15M
    He is non EU
He has future potential of Resale
He has not spepicific position to play such as he is not real Deffensive and Box to box
    He is real Right winger.
I thought there were Corruotion in his deal that is out of our Policy and out of ideal Reason beyond the normal activities

  7. You sir are correct. This is the new Milan direction and American business model… get rid of anything emotional and strong about Milan history, get rid of influential figures like Ibra and Paolo and then makenit pure business, no heart, all profit… sounds exciting right?… J couldn’t stand Elliot and can’t stand RedBird even more already..

  8. Winning the league with no budget given while losing the likes of Kessie? This owners are delusional thinking we can battle two fronts like that. And now we will become a branded, generic hooker for American market to suck every penny out of an iconic name that is AC Milan. No thanks, I’m out.

      1. Bro Kessie was worth 50-70m. Either the owners give the budget to renew him (20m commission plus 14mil.per year for five years) OR you buy someone to replace him which burns up the entire 50m on one player. That’s why they said “no budget”

        1. Then they are delusional after all.
It was already decided that Kessie was going to Barca when this owners became the owners.

  9. Lol Moncada is their money ball guy…..I’m into stats too but I also actually know football so I’m not going to critique what he does. Let’s hope he does a good job if this is what they have planned. After all he’s b3n pretty good with unearthing prospects, the issue is buying said prospects

    1. Moncada is a good scout, so if he has more power in deciding who to sign, that’s not really a bad thing. For closing the deals and the business part im not sure how good he is. It seems like Furlani might be the one asigned for that role. But Igli Tare is avaliable as well so he is a good candidate for that role too. Nothing is really certain at the moment so we will have to wait and see i guess. I just hope Cardinale has a clear plan and didn’t just went with this out of nowhere.

      1. Actually the plan is simple you can already foresee it from this article.

Moncada scouts for promising prospects with huge potential, recommends some signings.

New SD & TD signs these reccomended prospects at lowest cost possible.

After a few seasons, prospects reach their full potential (hopefully), becomes a star/key player.
Their values skyrocketed then its time to cash in.

Repeat from the top – again and again and again and again.

Perhaps maybe, then build a stadium.

        Win the UCL?
        Nahh no need for that.
Its easier to make money selling prospects for profit rather than going through a tournament that consists of elite teams/clubs across Europe battling it out to become champions of Europe.

        Serie A champion???
        Nahhh prize money is peanuts.
Selling Leao at his release clause of 150mil is equivalent to 6 Serie A titles’ prize money.

Redbird means business – and money comes first in business.

        1. I know people said such things about Elliott, too, but Elliott didn’t really do that. But Milan’s revenues have now increased significantly. Cardinale’s plan and Elliott’s would be the same. The best way to increase revenues is to get stronger, which is why it is so important nowadays to sign promising youngsters while they are cheap.

      2. @Rossi. I agree somewhat. I’m wondering if Maldini didn’t like the whole data driven approach because all they see is a guy in a suit crunching numbers and think that they could never replace the experience he has as a player. The thing is they’re both correct. I play football and watched AC for over 30yrs but I’m also a nerd, a nerd who btw has worked on said Moneyball type equations for sport economic analysis. The thing is there is value in the data driven approach, it needs to be complemented with someone of Maldini’s ability to see if you’re also on the right path. Maldini will see things the data doesn’t tell you and the data will inform Maldini of things he’s not familiar with. Maldini himself said he missed Boban because he would see things in attackers that he can’t see but in defence, Maldini always gets it right…note the signings for the basis of Milan is all defence and pivots. I wished they(Moncada and Maldini) could have both worked together better in that respect
