GdS: Mystery continues to surround Zortea goal vs. Milan amid ‘missing’ images

There remains some mystery surrounding Cagliari’s first goal against AC Milan on Saturday, with suggestions emerging that images were ‘missing’.

It did not take long for the hosts to take the lead in the eventual 3-3 draw when a poor corner found its way to Zortea who fired past Mike Maignan. However, what has followed is question marks regarding the positioning of Luvumbo.

Luca Marelli was in the DAZN studios and gave his thoughts on the situation, which were relayed by MilanNews.

“For Cagliari’s first goal, Luvumbo’s position seems to be beyond the last defender, and he is in Maignan’s line of vision. The Milan goalkeeper moves to the left to try to see something.

“Luvumbo is in an offside position in my opinion and is in a punishable position, which did not leave a line of vision to Maignan.

“If Luvumbo’s offside position is confirmed, it is a goal that should have been a goal disallowed for an active offside of the Cagliari player. The impact of the offside player on the goalkeeper should have been assessed.”

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) returns to the incident for Zortea’s opening goal inside the opening two minutes.

They state that in reality it is not clear whether the Angolan was offside or not, or whether it was Theo Hernandez who was actually covering Maignan’s view. However, the issue was the lack of application of protocol, because the images were never generated and shown and were therefore ‘missing’.

If Luvumbo were onside or offside it should have been demonstrated with the semi-automatic technology, then if he were offside the referee could have been called to the monitor to determine if he was impeding Maignan’s view.

The fact that no such images were ever shown and zero clarification has arrived from the AIA suggests there is a potential that they simply missed the incident.

  1. The VAR saved us from two more embarrassing goals so let’s just be glad they cancelled those two… It could have easily been so much worse. Time to move on and focus on beating Juve and starting a 10-match winning streak.

    1. Well that was vars job and fair decisions were then made. Not a favour for Milan. If the Cagliari player was in an offside position in the first goal then that’d be the only mistake or favour on any of the given/disallowed goals.

  2. We sure like to dwell on the past.
Regardless of if it was a goal or not, we were abyssmal.
To achieve success one should focus on what he can improve and not on what he can’t.
We can’t “fix” this var mistake, but we can fix our abyssmal performances.

  3. if it had been offside, the match would have developed differently until then, Milan would not have had to work on the ground from the first minute

  4. Realistically we didn’t deserve the win. Cagliari came to play and exposed our weakness for the world to see.

Hate that I have to say this, but it’s how I feel
