Nesta sympathises with current Milan struggles: “It happened in my time”

By Euan Burns -

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has sought to contextualise the current struggles that Stefano Pioli’s side are experiencing as they juggle Serie A and Champions League commitments.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia (via Radio Rossonera), the Milan legend was asked about the inconsistent form that Milan are showing at the moment and what could be the cause for it.

He immediately referenced the injuries that have been piling up for Pioli: “I see a little difficulty. The squad was short due to injuries. Inter and Juventus are opponents to fight against until the end for the Scudetto and we need the full squad.”

Another reason that Nesta offered, specifically for the 2-2 draw against Lecce at the weekend, was the difficulty in motivating effectively for a league game so soon after a huge match like the one against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. This is something Nesta says his sides struggled with when he was playing.

“It’s never easy to recharge your batteries after a night like the one against PSG, it also happened in my time to lose points in the league after certain Champions League evenings,” he said.

Milan went 2-0 up against Lecce in the first half but still ending up dropping two points, whilst Inter and Juventus both won their games.

  1. Anyone who has watched Milan or indeed football for long enough would not be surprised we dropped points after the midweek.

It doesn’t make it right, but it also doesn’t make it end of days.

    1. It would/could be acceptable if it happened to everyone else too. But it doesn’t. So therefore we fans are allowed to demand more. Even the benchwarmers shoud demand more. The results simply aren’t good enough.

      1. It doesn’t? Really? Do you pay attention at all or just complain? Just this past weekend City was held to a very lucky draw, and Napoli, Dortmund, and Spurs all lost. Every one of those teams was expected to win easily.
Proof once again of someone who has no idea of what they are talking about and just wants to criticize all the time.

        1. Inter won. Again. They always do. We don’t compete with Dortumund, Spurs, City etc in Serie A.

No idea? LOL. Look who’s talking. 😀

    2. It doesn’t make it end of days ey??
Funny how it keeps happening to Milan. And yet other big Serie A teams that play in the CL, fare far more better in that respect.

      1. Again, Napoli lost to Empoli. At home even. Lazio also was held to draw this past weekend, only Inter won. The other teams playing in Europe: Atalanta and Roma also drew, only Fiorentina won. So you are wrong, stop whining and posting nonsense.

    3. Delusional. The one chance we have to bounce back in the league and revive our season after one of our greatest European nights in recent memory, which we screw up, and you’re dropping these cliched statements about how it’s not the end of the world. How do you not see that there’s something deeply wrong with the club in so many aspects; from management, to the lack of belief, to injury problems, etc? Ridiculous.

  2. Everyone’s clamouring for Abate who let’s face it, is only in charge of kids in a Primavera which we don’t know the quality of (likely poor), ….so why not Nesta? At least he has actual experience with a professional team and barely missed out on promotion some time aback

    1. Abate… People haven’t learned ANYTHING from the times with Seedorf, Inzaghi, Brocchi, Gattuso etc.

Just look how many trophies we won with them. And more importantly… How did the matches look like under their coaching? AWFUL! SIMPLY AWFUL!

      1. Gattuso wasn’t that bad..he missed out on top 4 by one point and actually we played decently. (It’s the reason why I think Nesta would do well, just like Gattuso he actually coached in smaller teams and didn’t jump the line). Seedorf had potential, did well considering he was hired mid season but the players let him down. Would have like to see more as he wanted to change the way things were done in terms of coaching but Gallaini had his favourite aka Pippo.
Pippo and Brocchi were trash. Pippo did well at the Primavera level but absolute trash as a coach of the senior team and seemingly elsewhere where he went (I believe Rami said he was the worst coach he ever had, he couldn’t believe he was a coach lol). Pippo also had the highest scores on the tests for becoming coach and we see how that panned out.
