MN: New year sees Milan enter disappointing decline – the numbers of 2023

By Oliver Fisher -

In most cases a new year brings about a fresh start and the opportunity to do even better in the coming year, but for AC Milan the opposite seems to have happened.

MilanNews have compared where Milan are now after 26 games of the 2022-23 season compared to the same stage last season. The Rossoneri were leading the pack with 56 points this time last year, with two more on the board than Inter and Napoli.

However, Milan are currently a huge 20 points behind the Neapolitans and are also in a heated battle for the top four, a target that seemed a formality at beginning of the season but has become a dangerous tightrope after a poor string of results in 2023 so far.

After the victory against Salernitana back on January 4 Milan went on a seven-game winless run that saw them out of the Scudetto race, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. A win over Tottenham meant Stefano Pioli’s side reached the quarter-finals in the Champions League, yet the defeat to Fiorentina and dropped points at home against Salernitana either side meant everything returned to uncertainty.

Milan have won only four of 11 games in the league having scored 14 goals and conceded 15. If we extend the discussion to all competitions it is five wins out of 15 total games, with 15 goals scored and 22 conceded.
