Nieuwsblad Sport: Milan add Juventus-owned defender to their wishlist

By Ben Dixon -

With the injury crisis currently plaguing AC Milan, they have to be active in the January mercato and recruit in the defensive areas. However, reports have emerged about another name, which could cause Milan to act differently in the upcoming window.

There has been a consensus that the club will add two central defenders to their ranks in recent weeks, the first of which is due to be Matteo Gabbia, who will return from his loan spell at Villareal. The other addition has been in the air for weeks now. From Clement Lenglet to Thilo Kehrer, the links haven’t stopped.

Today, Nieuwsblad Sport (via MilanNews) have reported that another name has entered the fold for the Rossoneri, though. There has been contact with Genoa about a deal for Koni De Winter, and he fits the bill of what the club needs.

The 21-year-old is a Belgium’s under-21 regular, and there is a consensus that he could be in line for a call-up to the Red Devil’s senior squad. Above all, though, he has Serie A experience, which is a massive factor for the Diavolo.

However, there is a drawback to this – he would not be available until the summer when the Rossoblu will pay €10million to Juventus to make his loan move permanent. Following that, the Diavolo would have to pay €25m to secure his services.

While Milan are interested in him, there is no possibility of a Winter arrival in January. However, the idea of a summer move could mean Milan solely pursue the loan market over the next few weeks which could then free up funds for other areas of the squad.

  1. I feel that this isnt newsworthy.. You and I know that Milan aint gonna spend 25M on this guy, and even if we did this summer, that would be massively surprising.

Consider how we kept going back and forth haggling with Chelsea over Tomori’s fees, a guy who had actually proven himself whilst wearing our colours while on loan. And now we are suddenly gonna pay a similar fee to (with all due respect) an inferior player, especially during the time where the money could be either better spent on better alternatives or might as well pay a premium on a more established player instead.
