Feyenoord have confirmed that they have sacked head coach Brian Priske ahead of their Champions League play-off tie against AC Milan.

Priske was hired at the beginning of the campaign to replace Arne Slot, who departed Feyenoord in favour of a move to Liverpool, who are top of the Premier League at present showing that there were big shoes left to fill.

This season has not gone to plan for the Rotterdam club, who won the league title in 2022-23 under Slot. They are fifth in the table, with even FC Utrecht and AZ Alkmaar above them, while Ajax and PSV Eindhoven are the runaway duo fighting for the title.

Feyenoord won the derby against Sparta Rotterdam at the weekend but in the game before that they were dumped out of the cup by PSV, and on their official website they confirm that they club have ‘mutually agreed to part ways with Priske with immediate effect’.

The club cites the inconsistent results and a lack of chemistry as the main reasons. Alongside Priske, assistant coaches Lukas Babalola Andersson and Björn Hamberg will also be leaving Feyenoord immediately. Feyenoord expects to announce an interim trainer and backroom staff tomorrow.

“It is very disappointing for all parties that we had to come to this decision,. Although Feyenoord achieved some impressive results with Brian, especially in the UEFA Champions League, the first team’s performance has been far too inconsistent in recent months, and unfortunately, we see too little structural progress,” said general and technical director Dennis te Kloese of Feyenoord.

“As a professional and as a person, I still hold Brian in high esteem. However, sometimes you have to conclude that, despite everyone’s good intentions, things are just not working out, and you have reached a point where there is not enough support to continue forward together.”

As a reminder, Milan head to De Kuip on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie in what will be a return for Santiago Gimenez after he left the club in the winter window.

    1. As a Dane I’m a bit disappointed even though its been in the cards for some time that it could easily happen as they haven’t done very well in the Eeres Division. Whether its good or bad well that is difficult to say because they might surprise us with some tactical differences compared to what Conceicao and the squad has prepared for. On the other hand under Priske Feyenoord beat Bayern 3-0 in Rotterdam, beat Benfica and Gitona away and drew away against City.
Either way I think Milan should be able to beat Feyenoord also considering that they lost their spearhead striker to us.

      1. Yeah I hope so too, the odds are surprisingly very close still, something like Milan 46% chance of winning, Feyenoord 30% and draw 24%. I would rate us as having a better chance than that but the betting markets usually know what they’re talking about. Hope we get the three points.

          1. Obviously not an easy place to play Ricardo but considering they doesn’t even have a coach and they lost Gimenez to us it might be a good time to for us to play against them that is unless they pull out something completely unforseen out of their sleeves. Anyways I certainly doesn’t expect a huge win for us but expect an intense match and atmosphere but whether that will be enough only time will tell. It will also depend a lot on which Milan team shows up tomorrow.

        1. Considering their situation it sounds like reasonable odds and generally it isnt an easy place to play as they have some very active fans. I hope for a win as well but a draw wouldn’t really be the end of the world either.

    2. Feyenoord go into the game with nobody providing the team with tactics to play against Milan.
No matter how good the players are, without any type of guidance, I don’t see Feyenoord being able to compete with Milan, especially when they don’t even have an interim coach right now. I’m really surprised that they would decide to do this with such a narrow time gap between the announcement and the UCL match. It’s like they just want to throw in the towel in Europe.

      1. They might. They just lost their bomber…to us…and they’re doing poorly in the league. What are the chances that they will get past the next round if they get past us? It probably makes more sense for them in the long run to discard any potential extra matches and just focus on the league so that they qualify for Europe next term. Failing to qualify for Europe next term is probably more damaging than not going to the round of 16.

      1. Unfortenately we dont have the same possibilities in Holland to keep the best players. Players want bigger competitions. Gimenez wanted to go..

  1. Need to still be very careful. They may try to use this game as a way to bounce back and I’m sure they aren’t too happy losing their key striker to us.

    1. No bro. Have a heart and respect at least. The game will be tight just as against Empoli. We will eventually come out on top in the second leg but I want to see a great Feyenoord team as I want from Milan.
