Official: Inter vs. AC Milan starting XIs – three changes from the first leg

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has made three changes to the starting line-up for the second leg against Inter compared to the team that lost 2-0 in the first leg.

Mike Maignan retains his place in goal just as Davide Calabria, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez are part of the back four, but Malick Thiaw has taken the spot of Simon Kjaer as the centre-back partner for the Englishman.

Rade Krunic has recovered from a slight knee issue that forced him to miss the defeat against Spezia on Saturday, and he will be alongside Sandro Tonali in the midfield double pivot.

Junior Messias is also back after a slight physical problem and he starts on the right side of the attack, with Rafael Leao recovering to start on the left wing. Brahim Diaz will operate behind Olivier Giroud, with Ismael Bennacer out for the season.

Official Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Tonali, Krunic; Messias, Brahim Diaz, Leao; Giroud.

Bench: Mirante, Nava, Ballo-Touré, Rebic, Kalulu, Kjaer, Florenzi, Origi, Pobega, Gabbia, Saelemaekers, De Ketelaere.

    1. What is the difference between Messias and Saelemaekers?

Perhaps Messias has more goals than Saelemaekers this season.

    2. Why is that? They need goals. He scores twice as many goals as Saelemaekers ina about half of the playing time. Pretty simple.

    1. Who is gonna play, cdk, rebic, origi and other dead wood in our bench? Messias sucks big time, but so do the ones that are warming the bench. That says a lot, when flat tire messias plays. extremely poor transfer windows, are paying didvidents.

  1. Messias starting?… come on. And stop playing 2 mids v their 3. That’s a recipe for disaster. Meet their 3 with 3. Pioli is such a bad tactician.

    1. Playing with a proper 3-man mid is something Pioli should have implemented even before the season. It was the most obvious thing to do (well except you’re Pioli), and many people, experts and fans alike, called for it. Now it’s too late. Bennacer as AMC was the easy way out and now he’s out.
I hope management have realised by now that Pioli is a undynamic one-style coach who can’t adapt if his life depended on it, and get him only players that fit his system.

  2. Most likely we will get eliminated today but if we can get an early lead thiings could still change but its absolutely paramount that we stay composed throughout the match otherwise this could turn out ugly as we saw in the first half of the previous match against them.

We need the entire team up in gears to have a chance to reach the final. and hopefully we can still turn this around.

    Forza milan

  3. Not starting Kjaer is a huge mistake. SO is starting Calabria. How many times does he have to get destroyed before he loses his starting spot?

    1. We came close twice. We should have been up 2-0 and tied on agg. But that’s football. Hakan alos fouled Diaz on the edge of the box, never got looked at

  4. How can you watch this as a coach and not take any action?
How can you allow Diaz and Messias to make a mockery out of our every attack?

  5. No attacking strategy. None. Another classic Pioli performance. They’re not even getting the ball to Leao. Diaz is a useless midget.

  6. Whenever i see messias and diaz, i always remember the fifa game commentary:
Losing the ball under no real pressure

  7. Kalulu enters as a CB and imidietly he loses his man and we concede. You think Pioli would have learned by know not to play Kalulu as a CB after so much weak defending by him that literatly is one of the bigest reasons why our defense has been so bad this year. But nuh. At this point i don’t even think that Pioli favorises players, the guy is just stupid and that’s why he can’t see what everyone else sees.

  8. The approach is so wrong. Can’t believe he left Messias out there for so long. Oh well..let’s concentrate on what’s left of the league but this was poor

  9. Probably Pioli should rest all our starters for Rest of the season, so that they can prepare for next season.

  10. I bet he still won’t get fired. Remember when Mourinho won the Premier League with Chelsea during his 2nd term and the following season they were 10th. He got fired. Milan were humiliated in January and May, missing out on top 4, beaten by Inter easily 3x in a row, and Pioli still won’t be fired even in the summer, I guarantee it.

    1. Milan has scored only 3 goals in 6 games against Inter. All those goals came in a single match. We haven’t scored in last 5/6 games against them lol.

  11. Last rethorical question from me, I promise.
How can Giroud not win a single aerial duel with Acerbi in 4 consecutive games?

    1. Acording to Pioli suporters thats becaouse Acebri is a world class CB. Everyone has world class players (even Spezia) except Pioli.

  12. I’ll post the ratings here Oliver, no need to write another article:
Mike: 5, can’t be beaten near post
Calabria 4 can’t defend Lukaku when Lautaro is your man
Thiaw: 7, can only do so much but did well
    Tomori, 6 not bad
Hernandez 5, needed his attacking today but didn’t see it
Tonali 5, not bad but not great either
Krunic, MOTM cool, calm and collected
Diaz, 1 because the scale is between 1 and 10 and can’t find a lower number than 1
    Messias, 1 see above
    Giroud 4 no service though
    Leao 3 didn’t do anything
Kalulu 1, your man was Lautaro, how can u lose him like that

  13. : Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Tonali, Krunic; Messias, Brahim Diaz, Leao; Giroud… I think the new owner be wish or they are going to lose more in the future.. Milan need winner and fighter.. Pioli need be sack.. A coach without vision can never winner CL.. We are too lucky to win the league last season.. I blame my Maldini a lot to allow player leave for free. Please next season I don’t want to see Messias Calabria need to be bench Origi need to be sold.. please spend money to achieve goal

  14. You guys really tried. I admire your courage in believing that this team can pull off a miracle. The coach’s luck has run out. It is not so bad to be knocked out of the Champions League, what is very bad is the way the team lost points in the league and thus fails to make the next champions league. This is on Pioli and Maldini because they have a crazy dream of winning the Champions League with this team. We barely had a strong first team let alone second. The goal should have been to make the champions league each year until the accounts are fully balanced and can then be reinvested. This is a big step back because this team will not make the next champions league. So brace yourself and don’t expect any miracle this time otherwise you’ll be disappointed. See you at the Europa.
    Cheers.
