Official: Southgate leaves Tomori out of England World Cup squad – photo

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his squad for the World Cup in Qatar and there is no spot for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

Tomori was part of the Milan side that had the joint-best defence in Italy last season and won the Scudetto, yet Southgate has decided to go with the likes of Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Harry Maguire and Ben White.

It will no doubt be a disappointment for Tomori as one of the best defenders in Serie A, though he may still be called upon if there is an injury in that department.

  1. When Milan kept 4-5 clean sheets in a row, England didn’t call Tomori and all football fans (not just Milan fans) wondering, do you think Southgate has special access to private rooms, and can make love at any time with Lord Maguire’s wife? ????????

  2. Southgate has his starting defenders decided and Tomori isn’t going to be one of them. He also isn’t a true like-for-like backup for any of them.

If Southgate was more ambitious and wanted to play a high line and press on the front foot, Tomori and Stones would be the best LCB/RCB pairing they could have.

In this case though, he’s likely fighting for the final CB spot on the roster so it’s most likely any game time that player would get would be as a late sub to just sit in and defend crosses like crazy. Tomori isn’t the guy for that role.

I’m glad he won’t be burned out and hopefully has a strong second half of the season.

  3. Not just Tomori but Southgate didn’t call Abraham and Smalling who played really well with Roma.

It’s like Southgate dislike all English players who played in Serie-A.
