Officials believe non-penalty call on Pavlovic-Thuram contact was right – the explanation

There has been a lot of talk after last night’s derby about a potential penalty that wasn’t called on Marcus Thuram, after two challenges inside the box.

Inter though appear to be furious about a spot kick that they were not given in the second half. Both Theo Hernandez and Strahinja Pavlovic went in for a challenge with Thuram. The striker himself expressed his frustration, as did his head coach Simone Inzaghi.

According to a report from Calciomercato.com, the officials believes that it was a ‘little tap’ on Thuram that did not affect the dynamics that resulted. The referee Chiffi and the VAR chief Di Paolo had the chance to look at replays, but determined that it was not worthy of a spot kick.

The clear directive is that of the penalty to be avoided for micro-contacts: the light and not overwhelming touch from an opposing must not be punished; and this is how it was defined by those who saw it and judged it on the pitch and in the video room.

The belief is that the correct decision was reached, therefore. Theo’s slide was clean and there was nothing overwhelming on the contact from Pavlovic to Thuram, who also angled his leg across to perhaps try and invite contact.

      1. Saw an expert break it down. With Theos intervention the touch on Thuram didn’t change the outcome. If Theo wasn’t there it would most likely be a penalty.

        *Not my words*

        1. But there are multiple instances where the balls was going out and didn’t change the outcome but Pen was given. I don’t think changing outcome is not part of the rule.

    1. There’s an actually SempreInter. I thought I was just making that up . Now i really want to know why you’re here then . And how do you have time for both sites? Is it just you on sempre Inter, is that what this is?

  1. Thuram held back trying to get contact with Pavlovic. By the time of the contact he was out of posession and could have never progressed even without any contact. If anything, it was a yellow for Thuram.

  2. Agree with this part of the article “Thuram, who also angled his leg across to perhaps try and invite contact.”

Had a long discussion with an Inter friend on this incident.
Thuram purposely steps that left leg in front of Pavlovic. He’s looking for a contact call.
There is a definite tap in the middle of his calf. But he collapses like he has been shot in the back as Theo is simultaneously clearing the ball.

Shouldn’t be a penalty for that small touch that did not actually impact what was about to happen.
Thuram is definitely playing for contact and exaggerating the brush on his leg.
