Athletic: Striker in advanced talks with Milan as Liverpool clause will not be triggered

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s first signing of the summer looks set to be Divock Origi as the striker is close to leaving Liverpool on a free transfer, according to a report.

According to The Athletic, Origi will ‘wave goodbye’ to Liverpool in the coming months and the Belgian’s last game for the club could be the Champions League final against Real Madrid, given that his deal expires in June.

The 27-year-old had a clause in his current contract which dictated that a certain number of appearances would have triggered a one-year extension on the deal he signed back in 2019, but he has not reached that threshold.

The report adds that the representatives of the former Wolfsburg and Lille forward ‘have been in advanced talks’ with Milan over a move to Italy, so it seems that Origi will swap Merseyside for Milano in the coming months and the Rossoneri’s attack will get an injection of youth.

  1. Origi will be a fantastic addition to the team.
He is an extremely efficient goal scorer and very smart positioning helps him score many goals per minute played (and gets assists too — he does the right thing for the team, not the selfish thing for himself).

  2. Is everyone smoking crack? His stats are awful at all clubs he’s played at. Don’t need an injection of youth, we need an injection of goals next season

  3. Injection of youth? 27 is a great age but not young. That said I don’t really care about his age but moreso that he is not going to be some top notch signing like everybody thinks he will be. It’s likely he’ll be no more than decent.

  4. Here’s a stat for you. One goal one assist in two games against Milan.
I could see him sharing the striker spot and still getting 10+ goals in the league. He’s better suited for Pioli’s style than Giroud and he’s cheap. Worst he’ll be what he was at Liverpool (impact sub) but I could see him flourishing in Italy.

  5. Phil, you have no idea what you are talking about. His goals per minute and goals per appearance are literally amongst the best in Europe. He doesn’t get minutes because he’s behind Salah/Mane/Jota/Firmino/Diaz. But when he plays, he ALWAYS gets goals/assists. Also, he has scored in HUGE matches. Winning goal in Champions League Final for Liverpool over Tottenham. Also in CL semifinals that season. Big goals for Belgium in World Cup. He is a star that needs a place like Milan to give him minutes and allow him to shine.

Did you watch the Everton v Liverpool match 2 weekends ago? Obviously not. He came on in the 66th minute of a scoreless match and set up the first goal and scored the second goal. His numbers are fantastic in terms of goals/assists per minutes played.

Believe me, next year, when he scores his 18th or 20th goal late in the season helping us win the Scudetto, you may not remember that it was “DB” who told you in this message; but you’ll be thankful that I was right (and Maldini is right for going after him) and you were wrong.

    1. Thanks DB I’m convinced now. Can you share with me your source on his mins per goal ? I want to learn more about this legend

      1. Same… I’m so convinced this guy is the second coming of Christ now. So many fan boys are going to be heartbroken if he’s not as amazing as they all think he is. Literally everybody is talking as if this is a premier signing. I’m definitely in the minority that thinks he’ll be average or below but we will see, I’ll gladly be wrong.

  6. I don’t think that Milan should go for him, if they still have their champions league and serie A dreams…they might win the league this season, but it was because other clubs lost a bit of grip, but next season will be hard…with investcorp or Redbird set to take over, they should use this as an opportunity to try and bring a world class player to the club
