Strahinja Pavlovic of AC Milan

Pavlovic sent off for ‘DOGSO’ despite fact two out of four criteria are missing

The Sporting Judge has confirmed that Strahinja Pavlovic will be suspended for Sunday’s game between Lecce and AC Milan.

The surprise news from the press release is that Mike Maignan will be banned for one game because of something he said to the referee in the tunnel after the full-time whistle, but Pavlovic will also be suspended for one round.

The Serbian centre-back will not make the trip to Lecce for the game on Saturday 8 March at 18:00 at the Stadio via Del Mare. He was sent off midway through the second half during the 2-1 defeat to Lazio on Sunday night.

What is surprising, however, is the reason why Pavlovic was sent off. The two options could have been DOGSO – Denial of an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity (i.e. a player through on goal as the last man) or serious foul play.

The following reason is stated in the press release: “[…] For committing a foul on an opponent who had a clear goal scoring opportunity.” A reason that casts even more doubt on Manganiello’s decision, given the four criteria that must be met for a DOGSO.

The first is possession of the ball, the second is distance from the goal, the third is number of defenders and the fourth is direction of play. In the Pavlovic incident, at least two of these criteria are missing: the distance from the goal was still considerable and there were one if not two covering defenders.

  1. Idk I don’t have much of a problem with this call as if the roles were reversed I’d be asking for a red but the pk was abysmal

  2. i dont understand Milan supporters who defend ref errors against us. its just funny how the camera angle switches just before the foul, so that Gabbia and Theo were no longer in the picture. in a long shot you’d see that Gabbia is almost in line with the attacker and Theo is just a few meters behind (because he was jogging until he realized Pavlo didnt win the duel). both our players had the middle, and everyone knows that Theo easily catches the attacker before he’s even reaching the box.

    1. Speaking for myself, because sometimes there are things that feel blatantly wrong but the aggressive targeting of referees is out of hand and I really dislike articles that try to blame or focus on referees.

I’m disappointed and can disagree with a decision, but I can also respect it.

That’s not to say I don’t get livid when I feel a decision is particularly bad, but if there’s one which is ‘the toss of a coin’ then it’s more on the team and players IMO.

      Just my 2c.

  3. I disagree with Nelli and R’s comments above, which both claim that if the “roles were reversed, we’d be asking for a red”. We’d be asking for a red because we’re biased, not because the foul warrants a red.

“In the Pavlovic incident, at least two of these criteria are missing: the distance from the goal was still considerable and there were one if not two covering defenders.” Not only that, which should be enough because I’m pretty sure Theo would have caught up to Isaksson, but a I think a third prong of the DOGSO rule is missing: direction of play. The play was off on the flank and going in the direction of the end line, not towards goal.

  4. strange how you guys assume that theo of all people would catch up with the attacker. this season, we have seen several players waltz past theo like a hot knife through butter. At the time the penlaty was given, pavlo was the last defender, even if only by a few inches.
i have not seen any team that was given a soft penalty refuse to take it.
you win some, you lose some.
I really wonder what would have happen if Pavlo stood his ground didnt slide and match the guy for pace. he was not going directly on goal and pavlo was on the inside track, he could have nudged him away from the target.
They should play clips of Nesta, Maldini & Baresi for these guys. In Reality, a top class defender would have watched all those tapes already – and learnt a thing or two.

  5. Pavlo’s foul was also quite violent. I do believe that all things considered, the red card was justified.

Enough excuses. Lazio played much better. They deserved the win. We were garbage.
