Pellegatti gives thoughts on Leao’s renewal: “Milan only have to pay a third of his value”

By Oliver Fisher -

Journalist Carlo Pellegatti has urged AC Milan to spend what it takes to renew Rafael Leao because it would only cost a fraction of his market value.

There continues to be a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Leao, who was the Serie A MVP last season and drew the interest of Chelsea during the most recent summer window. His deal expires in June 2024 meaning that a renewal must arrive this season or a sale would have to be considered to avoid a free exit the following summer like Gianluigi Donnarumma and Franck Kessie.

Carlo Pellegatti spoke this morning on his YouTube channel (via MilanNews) to talk about the issue linked to the renewal of Leao, and he believes that the financial side of the deal makes a lot of sense for the Milan management even if it would require the commitment to a substantial investment.

“The investment to keep Leao must be high but any investment Milan make right now, 7 or 8 million euros for four years, is about 40 million in total, also considering the Growth Decree. If Leao’s value is 120 million, Milan only have to pay for a third of his value, 40 million,” he said.

  1. Sadly, the Milan owners / managers are short-sighted tight-arses who think they can get everything for a bargain basement price. They’ve already lost three top players (well, two plus Calhanoglu) for nothing. Have they learned anything yet? It doesn’t look that way….

  2. VEČ SAM TO REKAO U PAR KOMENTARA !!! Uzet Leaa ZA ONO ŠTO TRAŽI to če se isplatiti . Zadržat klauzulu i uvijek mogu prodati najmane dvostruko a i trostruko !!! Dakle ne gube ništa samo dobijaju I NOVČANO I KROZ 4 GODINE NJEGOVE IGRE !! Ukoliko se to ne napravi onda je UPRAVA Milana stvarno NESPOSOBNA a Red Bird TOTALNO NEOZBILJAN U SVOJIM NAMJERAMA

  3. Pellegatti’s logic is an oversimplification of the costs involved. Firstly, there are other substantial fees on top of player’s salary and then looking at this renewal alone makes no sense. The club already spent 35 million euros bringing him in from Lille, plus his salary and other fees from his current Milan contract. That would mean renewing him for 7-8 million euros, (which I would be okay with) would mean a total commitment on the part of Milan of close to his market value so they would only break even if he were to be sold at the end of his renewal for his current worth. I have no problems with people justifying renewing at 7-8 million euros but think things threw first before making such justifications.

  4. Milan should renew his contract, ASAP. I knew 7-8 mil euros is too costly but Leao’s currently irreplaceable in this injury-prone team with his goals and assists. Keep lowballing him and we’ll lose him for sure very soon since his value will rise by time. Yes, he’s probably not in the top-5 best in Europe, but he’s our MVP last season and we’re struggling without him.

  5. please I’m pleased with what Mr pellegatti has just said Milan needs to pay leao at all cost we need leao so much maldini knows that if milan losses leao for him to be replaced will be difficult instead of bringing pulisic and noa Lang to replace him instead buy both of them together with leao milan were known for having great players keep leao maldini should just help him and pay his debts to sporting and give him a contract of additional 3 years contract with 5million he will have no option but to receive it
