Pellegatti on ‘unbearable’ Maignan situation: “No longer wants any dealings with Milan’s management”

Carlo Pellegatti has named the two players he would like to see arrive if AC Milan sign a new goalkeeper and striker in the coming months.

Milan made the decision to sign Christopher Nkunku towards the end of the summer transfer window, but he and Santiago Gimenez are both still on zero league goals. This has led to suggestions that the management are already scouring the market for potential options in the No.9 role.

Meanwhile, there continues to be very little positive news regarding the renewal of the captain Mike Maignan. He is believed to have been left angered by the way that the club treated him earlier in the year as a renewal offer was pulled from the table, and his deal expires in a few months.

Pellegatti’s picks

Pellegatti published his weekly column for MilanNews and dedicated part of it to a couple of gaps in the squad at opposite ends of the field, and who he believes the fixes are.

“A necessary mention of the transfer market today and tomorrow. Allegri wants – perhaps I’m exaggerating, he demands – a penalty-box striker for the second half of the season,” he began.

“In Parma, while Milan were playing on the right flank, in the second half, I took a look at the penalty area. It was empty, with Ricci—I repeat, Ricci—the only Milan player, alone like a desert Tuareg. Not good!

“I have a favourite. It’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, a 28-year-old French striker, 192 cm tall, currently at Crystal Palace, with a contract expiring in 2027, costing €25-30m and… maybe the English like Gimenez! Is he too expensive? With all the money saved on a centre-forward in these ‘roaring twenties’, the little pig has plenty of euros to invest in a striker.

“Let’s get to tomorrow’s transfer window. The idea of having one of the world’s best goalkeepers and losing him because, according to his French colleagues, he no longer wants to have any dealings with Milan’s management due to his treatment last season remains unbearable for me.

“Anyone lucky enough to field Maignan – that is, at least ten points earned in the league – and then giving him away to other clubs has no excuse. If he were to leave us, there’s only one goalkeeper left, and very soon.

“I’ve always admired Elia Caprile, who I think is a great player. I know Inter also like him, but letting the Nerazzurri steal him from us would be a grave shame.”

  1. If true that maignan wants no dealings with milan management it shows that furlani is to blame for this mess. He is an idiot, stupid and incompetent and should be kicked away from milan.
At the same time if maignan wants to be clever, milan should have the courage to sign good goalie straightaway (Carnesecchi? Suzuki?) in the january transfer and send maignan to hell, possibly not using him till summer 2026 so he will lose chance of playing in world cup. Two can play at a game dear mighty mike!!!!!!

    1. Why though?
Maignan isn’t a contract “rebel” per se, he made it perfectly clear this summer that he won’t be re-signing, and Milan made the conscious decision to reject offers keep him for the last year of his contract.
Mike has been perfectly professional, playing (and playing well) and remaining committed on the pitch despite wanting to leave.
No sense to bench a top keeper just to be petty.

      1. He made it clear he won’t be renewing because Milan had had a contract offer out to him with they then rescinded, only for the club to come back again with a lower offer. If I were him, I’d leave too, after that.

  2. All is fair in love and war, I’d be content if he stayed but also not broken up if he leaves. I don’t think he alone adds 10 points to this squad, definitely an exaggeration. Look at the statistics and win share of games he’s missed vs games he’s started. A very good but also very replaceable player imo.

    1. Agree with this – I’d like him to stay but it’s not the end of the world if he doesn’t – unless we sign Suzuki… bit worried about Leao taking over the captain’s armband too…

  3. I like Mike but if he wants to take a hike its totally alltight.

Good goalkeepers is easy tog get, maybe Ederson?

    Forza Mike Forza Milan

  4. People need to stop talking about signing Suzuki in January as he is injured until the latter part of the second half of the season. Suzuki got injured in the game against Milan and underwent surgery with recovery time ranging months.

  5. Why the hell would we want Suzuki, get a proper GK, or give Torriani a shot. At times like this I wish guys like De Sanctis or Sirigu were still floating around the league, Top level Azzurri players, who are available for next to nothing. Mirante was the last of that group of goalkeepers, and now he too is retired.

  6. I don’t like Mike at all anymore, he’s become slow and unresponsive for about 3 years. Good luck and goodbye ex Magic Mike!

  7. If Mike, wants to leave he can. There will always be a better goalkeeper.Give Torriani a chance to prove himself after all Mike started from somewhere.
