Pellegatti urges Milan to spend amid financial resurgence: “I hope they have ambition”

By Oliver Fisher -

Carlo Pellegatti believes that the time has come this summer for the Milan management to push the boat out and make use of their improved finances.

Milan are expected to close yet another financial year with a profit, according to widespread reports, as the club’s financial health continues to improve. However, the club are yet to make a signing this summer having baulked at deals like the Joshua Zirkzee one due to extra fees.

As Calcio e Finanza reports, Milan registered a €6.1m profit in 2022-23 and they are expected to close 2023-24 with a profit between €10m and €20m as the key numbers continue to trend in the right direction.

The revenues – according to estimates – should be between €435-440m, an increase of over €30m compared to last season and including over €56m

Pellegatti spoke exclusively to Radio Rossonera and he touched upon the ambitions of the ownership and the need to take risks financially to bring in players that can make an immediate difference.

“In my opinion they don’t have the vision: I would rather spend 20/30 million more to have the possibility that the investment will be returned if I [the club] reach the last 16/quarter-finals of an increasingly rich international competitions.

“If I don’t arrive in the final eight of the Champions League, what savings have you made? Throw them away and get to a balance of -7 rather, which is still for a club that is doing well, which can become more than 30 later. If you invest a little more, the Champions League [revenues] will come back to you.

“We are in this situation because we made a mistake: I don’t blame Maldini and Massara because they had limited budgets, but if they had had different budgets maybe we would have built on a Scudetto-winning framework and they wouldn’t have taken De Ketelaere, Dest, Origi who gave us nothing and there we missed the train.

“I hope they have ambition but even if you risk something on an economic level then the investment will be returned! If you create a team among the top eight in Europe you have a really interesting fixed income, if you save 30 to not bring home 60 it makes no sense.”

  1. This team had many options to be on pair with Inter and even Premier League and Spanish top clubs. But after the scudetto instead of going forward they went backward. As Pellegatti says “don’t blame Maldini and Massara because they had limited budgets”, dont forget that we had 4mil sallary cap at one time so many players were not renewed cause of this and were lost on free. Then further the management didnt want to spend more then around 20mil per player which is nothing in todays market. In other words the ambition for being a top club and win titles was never there. It is all about 4th place CL money and exploiting the brand for money. The promises they make about “winning” are just there to keep you exited and keep buying their merchandise.

    1. Pelli is a clown last week he was defending the Cardinalle management, but today he is complaining like spoil school child.
What kind of credible journalist sits on the fence like this?
Knowledgeable people of the game know that the Milan management failed last season.
This season will be no different. They still have not signed anyone and their excuse is that the Euro 24 is on?
They have no plan and new names come flying in everyday.
Pelli what a pile of dog crap.
I’m interested to hear what The Curva have to say now?

  2. “I hope they have ambitions”…
    No, they don’t.
“Winning is boring”… quote from Jerry the Bozzo 🤡 Clowndinale.
Only ambitions they have is more money. They are american vulture hedges fund. That’s mean they are obsessed only with money, they have no class, no vision, no dreams, no pride…just more money…americans…pathetic. They start wars, destroy countries, sell their mothers… everything to gain more money.

  3. So whats todays flavor of the day strategically agai? Where should I spend the money and how much ahhh…. No wait. But what if someone complains here again.

I guess thats it. Strategy should be dare if you do dare if you dont.

I would say mine is to dare is to do, and i do not care what anyone thinks once i have made the decision based on vision and strategy

  4. Didn’t he say Milan were moving in the market and questioned if others were moving? Now he’s saying we need a bigger budget presumably to spend more on the targets we’re moving on or is it the targets we’re looking to acquire are more than we’re willing to pay for so we keep missing out on them.
Btw he also seemed to forget, as many ppl do, CDK was the second choice. The original choice was Botman to shore up what was a seemingly good defence. But turns out that same year our defending sucked. He’s quite correct in saying the budget is smaller in prior years but we made the most of it. Now we have a bigger budget and we don’t know exactly how to move in the market or have concrete targets functional to the needs of the team

  5. How dare you expect the management to spend more, in hopes of building up a more secured quality squad and go for greater glory.
How dare you sir Carlo. Why i never!!!
