Journalist believes Tonali will leave Newcastle ‘in 2-3 years’ and return to Milan as captain

By Oliver Fisher -

Carlo Pellegatti has revealed his belief that Sandro Tonali will come back to AC Milan at some point in the not too distant future and will captain the side.

The 2023 summer window started in a turbulent way for the Rossoneri as Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara were sacked as directors, leaving a new management duo of CEO Giorgio Furlani and chief scout Geoffrey Moncada.

They reassured key players about the strength of the project and the desire to build, but then their first big decision was to sell fan-favourite Tonali when Newcastle came in with a huge offer, one they did not believe they could refuse.

According to Fabrizio Romano among other sources, the midfielder joined the Magpies for €70m including bonuses, and is earning €9m net per season for six years. It is a sale that certainly generated an interesting spectrum of reactions.

Pellegatti spoke on his YouTube channel about Tonali given that he will soon return to the field after serving his gambling ban and he made a rather bold prediction, with his comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“In a month we will celebrate Sandrino Tonali’s return to the field. In my opinion, in 2-3 years, when he is still very young, Tonali will continue his career at Milan. It’s my idea. In my opinion, in 3 or 4 years Tonali will be the captain of Milan,” he said.

  1. They love a good love story in Italy, don’t they. They never come back the same player. I don’t even blue where he would play at Milan. Depth piece?

But if you make him captain then he has to play. Tough call.

  2. Been saying this for ages. Before he got banned the Newcastle fans I know were already saying he was too inconsistent. It’s the premier league so unless you’re in the untouachable bracket you are always goi g to be replaced by another shiny new toy after a few years.

They’ll sell him summer 26 so to not have to sell him cheap summer 27.

We’ll offer a 2 year loan with an option 🤣

    1. He was inconsistent before he even left us. 70M for him was highway robbery. But people are like OMG TONALI LOVES THE SHIRT CAPITANO ETERNO. I love the shirt too and I’m available on a free…

      1. Still far more consistent then what we have today. Also stepped up in big immportant games, something that no one in the current mid ever does.

        1. Correct… All of TJ, Musah, RLC combined didn’t bring d passion and fury required for big games like Tonalli…. We miss him.. he would have kept his starting spot ahead of all dis mercenaries in Milan now

    1. Not a chance he starts over Bennacer or Reijnders. He was already benched at Newcastle before he got suspended. Overrated and overhyped by the Italian fans and media.

      1. Exactly. All you guys who still think so highly of Tonali just have NO CLUE how badly he floundered around in the few matches he managed to play for Newcastle last season before he got banned.

From what I saw of Tonali at Newcastle, he had ONE good game in his brief Premier League season, the opening match, which Newcastle won 5-1 and Tonali scored his one and only goal of the season.

Newcastle then went on a three game losing streak, losing to ManCity, Liverpool, and Brighton. In all three matches, Tonali got subbed out around 20-30 minutes before the full 90.

Losing to ManCity and Liverpool by one point might be excusable, but losing to Brighton by 2 points triggered Eddie Howe to bench Tonali for the entire next match against Brentford, which Newcastle won 1-0.

Thereafter, Tonali lost his starting position, as Newcastle was clearly playing BETTER with him on the bench.
They won their next two matches, with Tonali coming in as a sub at the 70 minute mark in an 8-0 blowout against Sheffield, and then as a sub at the 68 minute mark in a 2-0 win against Burnley.

So, Eddie Howe decided to throw Tonali back in as a starter for the full 90 minutes in the next match against West Ham, and whaddya know, they only got a 2-2 draw.

Back to the bench he went for the next match against Crystal Palace, which Newcastle won 4-0, with Tonali coming in as a sub at the 69 minute mark.

        Then he got banned.

By this point, it was clear for all to see, especially with the Newcastle fans, that Tonali was struggling with the greater speed and physicality of the Premier League and was just struggling and unable to help Newcastle dominate the midfield.

I don’t think the Newcastle fans were sad to see him disappear, although for sure they were angry at getting ripped off for such a large sum of money for complete dog turd. But the biggest problem was that Newcastle was hit with an enormous number of injuries that season, including to some of their midfielders, who had been key to the success of the team in the previous year that got them into the Champions League.

So, yeah, Newcastle were hurting for midfielders, and Tonali was supposed to add that extra dominance in their midfield, and instead, he was definitely a weak point.

  3. Just wanted to make sure you guys realized that Tonali’s problems at Newcastle went well beyond getting banned for gambling.
Like K said, he had gotten benched for poor performances, and was not a regular starter at the time of his suspension.

    1. Concentrate then on how he played for us, not them. Sheva was a beast for us, for Chelsea though….
Not every transfer works out. That goes both for us and other clubs. Newcastle got a Tonali, we got a Musah for instance. Both can bust even more or come good

  4. Sure he can , as long as he want to reduce his salary from 9m euro nett to 4m euro nett for ACM and the transfer fee must 20m euro otherwise mister fur will not approve that
