AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli issues instructions to his player Ismael Bennacer

Pioli gives update on Bennacer’s return and suggests Musah could have fluid role

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has revealed that he could exploit the versatility that Yunus Musah can provide, while providing an update on an injured midfielder.

When Musah was signed during the summer transfer window there was some doubt about whether he would be deployed as a box-to-box player as he had been used at Valencia or if he could function in a deeper role like he has for the USA.

Pioli spoke during his pre-match press conference on the eve of the game against Lazio and he was asked by one of the reporters about the different roles that Yunus Musah can play.

“Musah can play in all three positions. He has different characteristics from Krunic and Adli, while he has the quality of runs when he plays forward,” he said.

“He has characteristics that will be useful to us, he is a complete player and wherever I use him he will be important for the team.”

Pioli was also asked about when he expects Ismael Bennacer to return, and he pumped the breaks on the idea that he will be back any time soon.

“Bennacer will return in mid-October to do a little more specific work, but there are no specific times. The recovery time will still be quite long.”

  1. I really like what I have seen out of him so far. Sure he needs to clean up small mistakes here and there, but he is strong, confident on the ball and can drive forward really well.

  2. In my opinion Musah resembles Kante in many ways and if Pioli is up to the task, he could well become such player. We sure need an energetic and tireless destructor.

    1. i think thats his best version. I’ve long made that comparison. He can play his defense higher up the pitch. And create dangerous counters. Curious if we are done with the high press and if so if it was making giroud and rlc too tired or they were worried about our CBs in 1 v 1s.

      1. I don’t think Bennacer will be the starter right away considering he got injured for half a year. It will took some time to make him perform like he used to. So big chance Pioli will played him as a sub for Adli, Musah, or even Krunic until he see him ready as a starter again.

  3. Its exciting to see how the new/young midfielders develop and find their roles in Milan. But Bennacer is truly the missing piece of the puzzle.

  4. I wouldn’t count on Bennacer this season. He might get some minutes by the end of season but nothing much. It’s fair to say we can expect him in full swing next season. If they don’t sell him.
