MN: Pioli could change formation again during the break but attitude must also improve

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have rather limped into the international break after a couple of poor results against Udinese and Salernitana, with a different attitude needed when the players return.

As MilanNews writes, from January onwards it has been a nightmare for Milan on all domestic fronts and if it weren’t for an excellent couple of performances against Tottenham, things could have been even worse.

Now Stefano Pioli has the opportunity to take stock and understand what needs to be improved having already made one big tactical alteration this calendar year by switching to a three-man defence.

That change brought about four consecutive victories between the league and the Champions League without conceding a single goal, after a 1-0 defeat against Inter using a back three for the first time.

As a result, the Rossoneri thought they had come out of the crisis and instead March provided misery: zero wins, two defeats, two draws and only three goals scored, with one being from a corner and the other from a penalty kick.

Now there is a period of rest where Pioli can conduct an in-depth diagnosis of the problems that have afflicted Milan in 2023. Further tactical changes cannot be ruled out such as the change back to a four-man defence to get more players involved in attack, but above all it seems a change in spirit and attitude is needed from the squad too.

  1. with the players we currently have it would make sense to use a 433 rather than 4231 or 3421.

I don’t get why Pioli had to make such a radical change to a back 3 instead of opting for 433 which in a sense will allow the team to keep its shape and provide more stability at the back.

      1. Having a trequartista is nice idea but it only works if you actually have a decent trequartista in the squad. And he REALLY doesn’t.
