Pioli discusses impact of ‘leader’ Mandzukic and why he ‘expects a lot’ from Leao – video

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has acknowledged that his team were not at their best against Genoa, but that getting the job done was very important.

Milan got the job done at San Siro earlier this afternoon as an own-goal secured the win against Genoa. It wasn’t pretty for a majority of the game, but at least the three points were claimed and that is the important thing.

Speaking on Milan TV, coach Pioli commented the victory against Genoa with his comments transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

“I believe that continuity was our strong point, but we wasted too much. What matters, however, it is the victory, and we did it with the right desire. Now let’s think about the next match against Sassuolo which will be difficult,” he said.

On the win being message to the other teams: “It is true that we must give the messages to ourselves, but it is also true that last weekend we won and everyone else won. We know our important characteristics and we must do well.”

On Mandzukic: “He has done well, he is a leader from the point of view of character, of desire and he is a strong and reliable player. Of course we are sorry for what he did not give before, but now he is recovering. Now what counts. we can do it from Wednesday onwards.”

On injuries: “Unfortunately, you always pay for injuries. The team did well on the pitch and interpreted the game well, even if we risked something.”

On Leao: “We have to expect a lot from someone with so much talent, he moved well but missed the stop in front of goal. It was not served much, but he certainly has the chance to improve”.
