Pioli discusses Milan’s ‘project’ regarding Leao and what is ‘difficult to establish’

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli has remarked that Rafael Leao does not yet have a fixed position at AC Milan, but it will become apparent with growth.

Leao is not having the best of times at the minute as he has scored once since early January, he was not at his sharpest against Genoa on Sunday nor against Sassuolo in midweek as Pioli continues to challenge him publicly in the media.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic sidelined due to a muscle problem, the Portuguese forward has had plenty of opportunity to show that he can play the striker role well and cause problems, but ultimately he has struggled and his one goal in recent months came on the break during a 3-1 victory over Parma.

Pioli spoke to the media who gathered at Milanello on the eve of the game against Lazio and spoke about the future of Leao, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

“The Leao project goes on regardless of the role. He continues his growth and maturation, as is normal for such a young player,” he said.

“Then it is difficult to establish what Rafael’s final role will be. The growth of a player allows you to find a job and a position. The important thing is the growth of its value, then we will evaluate the position along the way.”
