Tuttosport: Pioli thinking of ditching three-man defence after March misery

By Oliver Fisher -

It seems likely that Stefano Pioli will ditch the three-man defence when AC Milan resume action after the international break, a report claims.

The switch in formation served its purpose initially as the team recovered from a dreadful period in which they conceded 12 goals in games against Inter, Lazio and Sassuolo to register a run of clean sheets and to book a place in the last 16 of the Champions League after beating Spurs without conceding.

According to Tuttosport (via MilanNews) this morning, after the break Pioli could decide to abandon the 3-4-2-1 formation that he chose to give his team greater compactness after letting in too many goals during January.

He is thinking of returning to the 4-2-3-1 formation with which Milan won the Scudetto last season, because in the last few weeks the attacking department has often looked lost while in the last three league games the Rossoneri have conceded six goals despite playing three centre-backs.

  1. 4+2-3-1 is Milan identify bcos the previous issues was that CDK came to Milan playing the 10 and was doing well but along the line the loosed form so him abscence of performance affected Milan badly that was WY it seems the 4-2-3-1 was not walking

  2. Bt using krunic/Diaz in that role instead of CDK is a good one bcos CDK needs to improve flexibility adaptability so krunic can assist Diaz.bcos of his passes which can help the wingers revived well

  3. The back three experiment has run its course. Lessons learned: 1. Krunic’s physicality and discipline seem to have been a key in our defensive improvement. Maybe Bakayoko and Pobega should get more playing time as well. 2. Thiaw is a revelation but still raw. 3. That being said, there is no way Tomori should be starting over him or Kjaer. Tomori needs to sit out for a while 4. Apart from the Inter match, Pioli is not to blame. The team was performing well and firmly in second place until the Roma match. Players need to take responsibility and step up. Fatigue? Giroud (36 years old!) and Theo play a lot of minutes, work hard, played the whole World Cup, and are still our two best players this season.

  4. Kalulu on right back, so he should be target man, to come back at defence more frequently. Give theo space more on attack. And rotate Krunic, Tonali, Bennacer, who should be more careful about defensive part. And just gamble, go more to attack
