MN: Pioli faces De Ketelaere dilemma ahead of Juventus game – the risk of dropping him

By Oliver Fisher -

A report has speculated that Stefano Pioli could send Charles De Ketelaere to the bench for Saturday’s game against Juventus at San Siro.

MilanNews writes how De Ketelaere was among the players who received the most criticism after the defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea last night as he still appears to be a long way from the player who did great things with Club Brugge last season.

It may well have been his worst performance in a Milan shirt so far but potentially came in the most difficult game. Pioli is giving him a lot of confidence as he has started 7 out of 11 games played so far across Serie A and the Champions League, but there is a question to be answered in view of the Juventus game.

De Ketelaere will certainly have a great desire for redemption after the disappointing performance in London and for this reason he could have an extra boost to do well against the Bianconeri, while ‘punishing’ him by dropping him could then bring him down on a psychological level.

At the same time, the Belgian is struggling and with a result absolutely needed, a change in that area of the pitch could be what it takes to give new life to the attack with Brahim Diaz the most obvious candidate, or Rade Krunic if Junior Messias were back and started on the right.

  1. It will him look guilty for the result. The whole team and coach had very bad day. And of course the injuries is one part of it.
Hope he’s mentally strong as he gets a lot of criticism right now.
    CDK will strike back!

  2. I feel Pioli should let him know that there is a need for him to calm down and play. He should stop playing to impress. We know his potentials already, so he should play with the team. He holds on to the ball unnecessarily a lot which can be so annoying.

  3. Tata- kalulu/Gabbia/Tomori/Theo- Pobega(Vranckx)/Benna/Tonali- Krunic(De keta)- Leao(Rebic) /Diaz(Giroud) a 4-3-1-2 that would be a rehearsal for Chelsea.

  4. while ‘punishing’ him by dropping him could then bring him down on a psychological level. lol playing him and he is clearly not ready is the real punishment he at this time don’t understand milan system its like we playing 10 against 11 and playing in 4213 with attacking midfielder don’t understand the system is suicide
chelsea didn’t beat milan ,milan beat itself i hope we don’t repeat the same mistake

  5. That formation would suit him well as he doesn’t track back much, the 3-man midfield would aid his advance & would be better if krunic/pobega plays LM, bennacer/vranckx plays CM, tonali/adli/bakayoko plays RM, it would allow enough rest for the players, it’s very obvious, they are fatigued, they haven’t lost form but just simply tired

  6. If team didn’t play well as whole it means coach plan was wrong. When missing many player fur injuries as a coach. Needs to rectify
    1- Wrong training techniques
2- how to build a team depth
    3- Alternative game formation
Now. Did we see any of above being addressed even? Pioli is dumb like hell. Spirit alone doesn’t make team win… change formation to either 4-3-2-1 or 4-4-2 diamond shape till your players all in his disposal

    1. Pioli is a good coach at best. He is too stiff with pattern and formation. When you have so many injured first team players, you should have a plan B pattern. And in champions league, having one set of play alone is not enough.
Don’t get me started with set pieces. Lots of clubs and coaches love it and not pioli. We can’t score with set pieces and neither can we defend it or aerial balls

  7. Drop him. CDK has simply not been good enough and he needs to work harder to get on the ball and make plays.
Even Leao was benched a few times for Rebic earlier in his Milan career.
He’s not ready to play in our system yet so play Diaz there

  8. No secret I’m a big CDK guy–maybe the biggest–but I agree that yesterday’s match was his worst in a Milan kit. To be fair, a tough opponent, a tired squad, and a starting 11 with very little chemistry (especially defensively) had a lot to do with that. But I wouldn’t mind the kid having a few tough training sessions where he knows he isn’t starting to get his head right. Let him come off the bench in the second half against Juve and see if he can take advantage of a fatigued opponent and build on that heading into the rematch v Chelsea.

  9. i wrote to ac milan last year explaining weaknesses. They never replied. They won the scudeto because the other were not good enough; not because they were much better. The midfield is not good enough. The left aisle is Leao or Theo.
On the right, nobody. They are too much in the middle. Besides that they dont serve Giroud on time or they dont. Leao many times could have served him but did not. We can see on images Giroud in the right place but the ball does not come, then the door is closed. It would be time that Pioli shows to the team all the positions in which Giroud put goals in England. There are too many waste of occasions.

  10. Starting Diaz against Juve seems to be a wise choice to me. CDK needs to sit outside for a few matches, so he can just watch and learn.

  11. I said it when we signed him, Belgian league is really shit, he doesn’t get the time here at least less time and physical it’s much more difficult then in Belgium. The one game against Bologna he looked good, hopefully we give him time, Leao needed two years aswell

  12. Just play him.We have to get CDK going.

I never want to see Brahim play for Milan again let alone start. Krunic ? Still waiting for him to do SOMETHING against good opposition!

  13. Playing him against the toughest opponents is less likely to “get CDK going” — he’s lacking confidence right now; you can see it on his face. We do NOT need that Saturday in a HUGE match v rival Juve. Diaz was up for the match Saturday — he and Leao were the only ones that were up for it. Everyone else was asleep.

I am a fan of his and I think CDK has fantastic potential and has created chances earlier in the year; but versus Chelsea, he had one horrible pass attempt after another intended for Leao but none of them ever had a chance to get to Rafa. You could see the look on his face — he looked lost.

He needs to sit and he is more likely to get his confidence back against Verona or Monza (after the Chelsea match). He can maybe score or get an assist and it can turn his confidence around. We can’t afford to have him play poorly vs Juve and Chelsea.

  14. Come on Milan Fans, we need to give all these players a break. Kessie, Bennacer, Tonali, aven Leao need at least 1 season to settle and perform better the following season. We can’t blame CDK or any of the new players just because they flop this season. Also just because we got trashed against Chelsea, doesn’t mean we sux. We have depleted team, plus loosing to another strong team is no shame.

  15. Look guys you people always slam brahim Diaz for everything he does but i don’t care i like him for one thing if brahim is on the pitch he might be playing wrongly but he plays with his heart he helps the team if brahim should be at his best we all will love him
