Pioli points out Milan have used three-man defence ‘several times’

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has pointed out that the Rossoneri have used a back three several times already this season as he looks set to do it again against Cremonese.

Speaking to DAZN ahead of the match in Cremona on Tuesday night (via Milan News), the coach was asked about his team selection which surprised many fans and pundits.

The inclusion of German defender Malick Thiaw for his first Milan start has led to suggestions that it is a back three rather than the more commonly used four, given Fikayp Tomori and Simon Kjaer are starting the game too.

When asked about it, he pointed out that it is not new for the team and suggested that Junior Messias and, by extension Fode Ballo-Toure, will be wingbacks.

“We’ve already done it it several times with Messias on the flank and centre-backs who are able to slide and run with the ball,” Pioli said.

He also said that Milan must approach this match in the same way that they have all recent matches: “We must be consistent, approach these matches well and carry on our way of attacking and defending.”

On the emotions of the evening in Cremona, Pioli stressed the need for concentration on the game.

“No, I’m thinking about something else. They are good memories, but there is a lot of concentration for tonight because we know how important it is. Arriving at the break with a positive performance would be very useful,” he said.
