Pioli reveals when the ‘spark’ between he and the AC Milan squad was born

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has revealed exactly when the strong bond between the members of the squad was established.

Pioli steered the Rossoneri to a second-placed finish last season as Milan enjoyed one of the best runs of any team in Europe during the post-lockdown period. They even mounted a title charge for most of the last campaign before injuries eventually caught up with them.

The former Lazio and Fiorentina boss has been praised for his role in transforming the team’s fortunes, as they now appear to resemble a group of friends rather than just team-mates, with the collective spirit on show for all to see.

Pioli spoke during an interview with Fatto Quotidiano about a number of different topics ahead of the new season, and he began by sending a message to CEO Ivan Gazidis who was diagnosed with throat cancer earlier this week.

“Strangely, the spark between us was born in the Zoom meetings during the first lockdown. We took the time to get to know each other, we talked about our lives. Not just about football. And the group was born,” he said (via MilanNews).

“Friends? No. We are not friends: we belong to a common idea of values. I feel there is empathy, maybe even a little magic between us.”
