GdS: Pioli breathes a sigh of relief regarding Tonali – the data shows his importance

Some positive news has arrived on the injury front as Sandro Tonali will be fit enough to play from the start against Empoli on Saturday night, according to a report.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports that Tonali was unable to play for Italy due to a muscle slight muscle sustained against Napoli, but now his problem seems to have been disposed of and Stefano Pioli hopes to have him back in the group for the resumption of training at Milanello today.

The midfielder is the player who has covered the most ground for Milan in the first seven Serie A matches, with an average of almost 11km per game (10.791 to be precise). The Rossoneri No.8 is at the top of this ranking, ahead of his double pivot partner Ismael Bennacer and compatriot Davide Calabria.

The paper also highlights that Tonali is crucial in the way that Milan want to play which is vertically at a high tempo, as his 176 positive passes in total result in an average of 29.33 per game, which is much higher than the team average of 21.86.

In the coming weeks Milan will face many crucial matches and Tonali’s spirit and determination are needed in the middle of the field, because the Italian has become a leader in Pioli’s team.
