Pioli admits he is considering tactical changes as he evaluates two new signings

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has admitted that he is thinking about some tactical tweaks having added some key pieces in the transfer market.

Pioli spoke to the reporters who gathered at Milanello for his pre-match press conference about a number of topics including the game itself against Inter, the change in ownership and the various bits of transfer speculation.

As part of it, he was asked if he is considering any new tactical alterations given the squad is now locked in place and he has multiple players at his disposal for each role.

“I waited for the transfer market to end. I still think that we shouldn’t play official matches with the transfer market still in progress. The arrival of some players is leading me to think about some new possible tactical ideas.”

One of the new additions was Aster Vranckx who arrived on a loan with option to buy deal from Wolfsburg and will add some physicality and athleticism to the midfield department.

“He combines quality and quantity, he is a complete midfielder. He is an interesting guy. The club continues to focus on young talents and he falls into this category,” Pioli said.

The other deadline day acquisition was Sergino Dest who arrived from Barcelona via the same formula as Vranckx. Pioli believes that the USA international will not just be useful for the role of right-back.

“We are all sorry for Florenzi. They are trying to understand the recovery times. Dest has quality and speed. We took him to play as a full-back, but he can also be useful in other areas of the pitch.”

  1. Why Gabbia didn’t leave may be we might see a change of formation. Dest as full back with two strikers upfront….i wish we can knock the light of inter at early this season…..a win would be icing on the cake…..

  2. Kjaer is back from injury.

If we do 3 in the back (not so sure Pioli is into that idea; but we will see — it does suit Theo and Dest better…Theo plays for France national team as LWB in a back line of 3), Kjaer would be on the left, not the middle. Tomori is more comfortable in the middle than left and Kalulu on the right and Calabria on teh bench.

    1. Kjaer can’t be on the left cos he ain’t got pace. He’s a sweeper so the central role in defence would suit him better. Also he will be able to use his long passes to create from that position. Kalulu and Tomori is well suited for the left and right cos of their aggression and pace.

    1. Why can’t I be serious? Listen, I love Cala — he’s a Milan boy and a Milan man and bleeds red & black and will forever. BUT, the bottom line is, Kalulu is MUCH faster so even if he gets beat against a dribbler, he has faster recovery speed (and Kalulu doesn’t get beat as much as Calabria does). As far as offensively/going forward/getting good crosses into the box, Kalulu is WAY better. There’s no question — not even close. Defensively was always Cala’s strength and frankly I even think Kalulu is better defensively.

If Kjaer is truly healthy this year and Thiaw is playable, then my opinion is that Milan would have a better starting 11 on the field if Kalulu goes back to his original position at RB and sit Calabria on the bench.

  3. I would like to see Milan plays 4/4/2 diamond shape. Theo/laejer/Tomori/Dest/Cala.[left to right.
Midefield Tonali. Benacer right middle, Pogeba left. De K attack midfield. Leao/origi[Ss/St]. This formation would make inter squeal

  4. Since we all have become pioli here so I can put my input lol tomori on left side of defence kajaer in middle white kalulu on right….it can help cover their natural roles….you can play fluently with speed of tomori and kalu with steal of kajaer….get fullbacks of theo and dest to bombard forward……it will be fun to watch with tonali hold a deeper role along with isma on right and new varnchxx on left let cdk be on tip of strikers with free role to roam giving support to strikers…..Well for strikers I will leave on you guys…leao or rebic along with giroud.

  5. “We took him to play as a full-back, but he can also be useful in other areas of the pitch.” Sounds like Pioli may be considering him for furthur up the pitch. Possibly RW ?

  6. Pls my concerns, Pioli should not in any means sell Leao and Tonali, because they contributed for the success of last season
